I just did this. I had to pay duty (2.85%). I interpret the reg to mean that a US car re-imported from Canada does not have to pay duty b/c the car already paid a duty to the U.S. when it was originally imported. But, my broker did not see it that way (and I spoke to two brokers) so absent importing it myself, the exemption was not going to happen.

Just FYI, I re-imported a US car yesterday from Canada. After a significant amount of detective work I was able to find a photocopy of a Florida title for it. I drove the car myself entering via the Champlain border crossing. I also had a Carfax and the Canadian version - Carproof with me. Both showing the car had been originally registered in the US. I gave all the paperwork I had to the customs agent and they, checked boxes, stamped stamps and did not ask me to pay an import tax. I made sure I got outta there as fast as I could and drove all the way down to NYC like hell in case they changed their mind! YMMV.

Well done. I have the original U.S. title. Again, my broker wasn't up to the task and I didn't have the time to go get the car and drive it back. You saved yourself lots of coin.

So what'd you bring over?

x2 well done ilko Good to know that with the right CBP agent the appropriate documents you can import without paying duty.

As a side note a US buyer purchased my Canadian 993 and imported it himself. He had to pay 2.5% at the border. The CBP called me at the time of import to confirm the sale price.

Most brokers / shipping companies will charge you 2.85% duty. The 0.35% is an administrative fee.

I see some folks here used transport companies and/or customs brokers to re-import a US car from Canada. I'm looking to do the same.

Can you guys share the names of some reputable transport and/or customs brokers? Thanks!

They handled everything. Logistics was good. Took a little more time than I expected to pick up vehicle, and then there was a delay at border, but otherwise, all paperwork completed. No issues w customs. I received original docs in mail shortly after car arrived.

About to do this this week from Canada. Update to the CBP web site here has this:

"If the vehicle has not been in your household for at least one year, you will be required to pay 2.5% duty, which is assessed based on the purchase price or blue book value."

Web:
https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/det...-the-u.s.-with

Edit
Well, read a little further and on here it states as this thread has confirmed.... duh. Move along.
https://www.cbp.gov/trade/basic-impo.../importing-car

A vehicle taken from the United States for non-commercial, private use may be returned duty free by proving to CBP that it was previously owned and registered in the United States. This proof may be a state-issued registration card for the automobile or a bill of sale for the car from a U.S. dealer. Repairs or accessories acquired abroad for your vehicle must be declared on your return and may be subject to duty.

The VIN has the country of destination imbedded in it. If it has a valid US vin it was made to US DOT and emission specification and was previously originally imported into the US so I can't see a duty issue. I would call the DMV in the state you will retitle it in and ask what documentation beyond your Canadian title you will need. Probably
nothing.

You need a copy of a US title or a copy of a US registration. The former worked for me. However the anecdotal evidence is that some customs offices are more lenient than others. There have been people who have been unsuccessful at claiming a duty exemption even with the above documentation...

Finally, your customs broker wants to do the least amount of work necessary and move on. So keep digging until you find the proper paperwork and then keep your fingers crossed.

Sorry for bringing back an old old thread but wanted to see if I can get any tips.

I purchased a car from new Zealand, but the car was last registered in NY just over a year ago. I got all the paperwork proving that this is in fact a re-import but my customs agent says the same person that exported the car has to re-import in order to qualify for Duty free importing. I've asked the seller to see if he is willing to do the re-importing but the customs agent now says he has to be a US citizen... I feel like this should work but somehow I keep getting blocked. Anyone have any tips?
