Default Varioram Article

Good article on the Varioram system/technology in the January edition of Total 911. (Sorry I don't have a link or know if one's available to this issue).

Yes, good tech info

Is the first question people in the UK really ask "is it a varioram?" when looking at a 993?
Thought that was kinda funny...

I'm not a tech guy, but I still was able (somewhat) to appreciate how remarkable the engineering is that goes into these things.

Poor 95s, they get no respect. Having said that, Vram sure does help the midrange.

I fixed that in my 95. VRAM is a great addition, especially it you get it without OBD-II !!!!!

I suspect so, I saw the mag and the article when visiting Barnes & Noble a few days ago. My eyes glossed over with all the techno info. I assume that what the writer said was varioram is a good thing?

Bummed my car was one of the earlier ones that didn't get the Varioram lettering when it was cast.

Forgive me for being a little cynical here.
The article was written by a guy who sources 911's for people for a living .
In the UK (and Ireland) the varioram question is one of the first that folk ask when looking to buy a 993 , especially since we don't have the same CEL problems with our OBDII over here. Also , if you're looking for a RHD vario C2 in the UK they only delivered something like 300 (as opposed to 700 pre varios) so good ones are getting hard to find.
Where's all this leading?
Well it's just that I got the impression that the author was more interested in reducing the importance of the vario model in prospective buyers minds .. Dare I say it , for his own gain ,than anything .

I've noticed the "conflict of interest" too. While I like the magazine, I think their writers' marketing activities detract from its credibility.

yeah.
I still really enjoy the mag...
but I read an article, and voila! the next page is an ad for the company or car just featured in the article.

Cheers guys , it's good to know I'm not alone.

Whereas I do still buy this mag from time to time , I resent that the editor takes me for a fool.

The Porsche community is filled with well-known "experts" whose articles and opinions are scattered all over the various monthly magazines. If you ask me, not one of their opinions is worth a damn. These are the same idiots who parrot the mindless mantra "buy the newest you can afford" in their buyer's guides. I don't think I've ever read an opinion I have actually agreed with in those magazines, except some of the readers' letters to the editors.

Then again, I don't like the PCA either because I think most members are self-important asses with absolutely no life - so maybe I just have a problem with the Porsche community in general

So I just read the article and based on this chart that I scanned from the article what's the big deal other than some cool noises that it makes above 5000 rpm??? They look almost identical in performance numbers, right?

On a race engine, not much. However, at part throttle and less than 5K rpm, VRAM noticeable improves throttle response. I've had the benefit of comparing an otherwise identical car with and without VRAM, and can tell you it's a great upgrade for a street car. Definitely worth the time and expense I spent on the update.
