Really nice, especially impressive attention to detail. Couple of questions:

(1) What did you use to apply the Surflex to the vinyl?
(2) How difficult was it to recover the handbrake lever and do the shift boot?
(3) Is your new carpet going to be OEM-like or different?

Mark, two questions:

1. What was your old round shift ****, where can I get it, how does it attach?
2. Can you really paint carpets? If so, what did you use? Any tips? I'd love to do this.

Thanks everyone.

1: The surflex sticks pretty well to clean vinyl. I scrub it really well with soap and a rag, or if it is pretty dirty, clean it with lacquer thinner first, then soap and water.

2: Not as hard as I thought, but I have a bit of experience doing upholstery work. If you can use a sewing maching, you could do it.

3: Once I replace the carpet, I'll go with OEM Sliverknit. Check out www.928leathershop.com (Rob Budd, Rennlist sponsor). He sells full carpet kits. That won't come for a while, though.

The old round **** was a $25 carbon fiber **** I bought off ebay. It felt great, and if I hadn't found the deal I did on the 997 ****, I'd still be using it. The carpet was dyed with SEM color coat (Landau black). It's really better for just touching up carpet, but it worked surprisingly well for the color change. The carpet is still pliable, but it is nowhere near as smooth or nice as new carpet. My carpet needed replacing anyway, so I didn't see a downside. I am looking forward to when I can replace the whole thing.

I won't be doing any sewing or the like on the seats. The dye (even from the factory) is a surface coating, so once you remove the old factory dye, the new dye sticks just as well. It's a pretty easy process. I'll be sure to post pictures up this weekend once they are done.

Mark, that carbon **** - how did it attach to the shifter? Set screws? How large is it?

I have a voodoo round **** on my Miata and absolutely love it. The round aluminum/leather **** I have on 993 - no so much.

How does the texture of the carpet feel after the dye? Vinyl yes but I thought you couldn't dye the carpet?

Are you going with the cloth on the seats as well? (center sections)?
I would love to see the final product. I think it will look very nice once everything is in place .

I like the plaid...great choice with the MB exterior IMHO. I'll be interested to see how well the color change wears. I've seen sone dye jobs wear pretty quickly on seats especially but it may be because of lousy application. Nice job and please keep us posted.

I thought you might like this! I've noticed some of the eclectic cars you've posted, and I think we have pretty similar tastes. I also thought about going to a flamenco red interior or something similar.

I won't be going with cloth on the seats. Ideally, I'd like to replace the seats at the same time as the carpet with GT3 seats or something similar, so the factory power seats aren't a long term item I see in the interior. When I change, I will consider using the same fabric for the center of the seats.
