Question Convertible Top Cables?

Hey, does anyone know of a good source for reliable convertible top parts, I'm looking for the cables, transmissions and the main control unit. Any suggestions would be great!

Is there a reason you're not just leaving it manual? One of the first things I did after acquiring my car.

Don't know that I would trust used cables, used main control unit either for that matter.

Mine stopped working last summer and I converted to manual. I eventually got around to fixing it, but as soon as I did, I also converted it back to manual operation.

Hey 993billw,

I would but being in a wheelchair makes it more challenging. I went most of the summer with it manual, and when i needed it up or down there was always someone around... It wasn't much of an inconvenience really but I'd like it working properly. Although there is some risk of it failing again, soon after its fixed. The chance we take...

Then definitely Sunset. My cables are original (I think) but I did get a new controller from Sunset (even after I converted to manual because it wouldn't release the top latches and the controller had been resoldered at least twice already). No problems since. Best of luck, getting to that controller is no fun.

So, Sunset it is for new...How about used? Is this too risky? There seems to be a few out there. Does anyone have any experience (good or bad) with going used. Being a quadraplegic I have to pay someone to be intimate with my car anyway, so maybe its worth doing it new to save the greif.

OT
How old is your rottweiler? I have been showing and breeding them (sometimes) for the past 20 or so years

We've had rotties for about 15 years now and can't say enough about what a great family pet they are. How about you, do you still have some/one?

Yes, I do. Here are 2 pics. One is my previous dog, Ch. Von Der Young's Mobster CDX, Gold Producer, Certified Therapy Dog, Top Sire 2000 and the other one is of his Gread Grand Daughter, Spirit, also titled and a certified therapy dog as well.

Great dogs, I had 3 at one time along with my 3 kids.

Just a bit of info - Porsche doesn't want to sell the cables alone without the side transmissions. Price is about $450 per side for cable/side transmission from Sunset.

Also make sure that you get the correct combo for your model year. '95s like mine had two motors on the back and thus use slightly shorter cable. '96+ cars had one motor on the back and longer cables.

Used go for about $250/side, but you never know. The failure mode appears to be strechnig of the sheath and shrinking of the cable. It can be fixed if cought early. The sign of impending failure is the roof slamming down onto the windshield frame at the last 1/3rd of it's travel.

Mike, thanks for the info, any experience with used? I still hear the motor so I assume its just the cable and transmission. Mine seemed to go without warning. One side went first, then with me playing with it the other side popped. So on a '96 there is only one motor. If I hear it working can I save on the control unit? It still locks on the windsheild.
