3-4 years ago I bought cables from Sunset and also was told couldn't get the cables separately, it was about $200+ each side. The cable (with the jacket) came with one immediate gear for the small housing, not the whole transmission (see pic). Unless they changed the policy again and sell the whole thing with cable and trans, and for $450, which isn't bad. But I can't imagine anything that is strong enough to break the trans.
