Default RS style trunk carpet

I currently have the RS strut bar in place w/no carpet. I have recently seen a few posts with pictures of a "half carpet" that covers the spare. Cannot seem to find the post.

Anyone have pictures, or a link to the previous posts?

Best,

Matt

IIRC the thread with the photo of the RS trunk carpet was about Optima batteries. But there have been several of those, so it may be difficult to locate.

I liked the idea of the RS half carpet, but after getting the price from Sunset (over $500...yikes!!), I changed my mind.

Any good local trim shop could make a nice replica for a fraction of that amount.

Or you could just take a piece of carpeting and cut it to shape with a razor blade....this is not an item that's on display and needs to look perfect.

I cut the stock carpet down and had an interior shop sew on the edge binding.
There is a piece of velcro on the back side of the carpet that holds it to the fuel tank strap.

Perfect. That's exactly what I had in mind - cutting and re-trimming.

Anyone know how the cutout picture above differs from the RS piece?

Thanks!

I don't have any pictures to hand, but the RS carpet piece is atttactched to the board and the extra flap piece is about 5 inches long, not as long as in your picture....If you are concerned with weight, why not use the RS CS method, it does without carpet and board altogether, quite handy to store things around the spare wheel.

Try this URL for a carpet picture on an RS;

http://www.gtclassics.co.uk/gtcsales/car10i.htm

I don't know if you will ever get it to look the same, as most lhd RS have the 92 litre fuel tank, which ticks out further than the regular tank.

Brilliant, thanks.

I think I will rig something up as did MB965.

May even go a few inches higher and retain the horizontal pocket.

Will post pics when complete.

Best,

Matt

Bumping this thread. Matt, did you ever have a custom mat made?

Check out this thread: https://rennlist.com/forums/993-foru...ck-wine-s.html

Pretty neat as well. I have the big tank up front so I could go with the real 993RS piece. I think they are around $500 so crazy money. Does anyone know if the RS piece is just the mat itself or if there is some kind of structure underneath it that makes it flat so it can carry weight? Or is it just the spare that supports the mat? A carbon piece of the same size would also be cool . Any other ideas?

Manila3,

Thanks a lot that is very helpful. What are the measurements on the pics? I can't really tell.

Seeing this piece I'm pretty conviced that the easiest way is to buy an old trunk carpet and cut it to these dimensions. I thought I would get rid of those turning plastic things that never work.. .

If anyone has a trunk carpet they would like to sell, please PM me.

Hi Guys, yes, I had my stock carpet cut to fit. It looks GREAT.

Cost $40 at a shoemaker's shop - the cutting is the easy part, it's sewing on matching black vinyl edging that takes time.

Basically, I cut just above the pocket to retain it (it adds some detail), and it's held to the fuel tank with velcro.

Will post pics when I get a new camera...

Matt, you added velcro to attach the "pocket" to the fuel tank, right?

If you cut a standard trunk carpet to make it into an "RS mat" there is no need to velcro AFAIK? I have the large fuel tank but I assume I can cut a standard carpet (one made for the small fuel tank) to make it into an RS carpet? The standard carpet is bigger (bottom piece) than the carpet made for the large fuel tank..

Not sure about the difference between various carpets that were offered, but wrt the standard US/Canadian version, there is a horizontal pocket in the middle of the vertical carpet surface. It is finished with vinyl trim like the outside of the carpet itself.

I chose to retain the pocket by cutting the horizontal line just above it. To visualize, please refer to the picture in post 4 above. I made the horizontal cut about 4 inches above that, and used stick-on velcro affixed to each of the tank and the carpet to keep the vertical portion in place and prevent it from falling forward.

Sorry I can't take pictures, but I hope that helps.

Best,

Matt
