Default Help car dies, do MAF's quit/break, 1121??

So my car dies on my 4 months ago, but starts back up almost immediately. Month later, same thing. Following month it dies and yet doesn’t restart first time, wait a few minutes and then she goes. Gets worse as time goes on, so I start the “Search” and come across the code detection method which offers up ‘1121’ MAF. I pulled it out and cleaned using the method recommended and also replaced the air filter, just to eliminate any questions on flow. It worked fine for the first 3 short drives just running around town, but this morning it died 3 times before I could limp it back into my garage.
I don’t mind replacing the damn thing but I would like to figure out if it is actually the problem without taking it into the shop.

One other thing that has been an issue I’ve been dealing with for about 8-12 months is it acting flooded if I shut it down without allowing it to idle for a few minutes before turning it off. If I swing into a parking spot and just flip the key with out letting it settle to idle it wont start immediately, usually at least 3 tries. It’s worse if I blip the throttle before turning it off, and seems not to happen at all if I allow it to idle for 5-10 seconds before shut down. It idles at approximately 600 RPM. I have learned to live with it, yet it is annoying, and just wondering if it’s connected to the other issue?

Thanks for any input,
Greg

Have you tried replacing the DME relay?

I have not tried replacing it. Forgive my poor knowledge of this, but how does the relay effect the problems listed?
Thanks again,
Greg

I would replace the DME relay with a new one. You should ALWAYS carry a spare DME anyway, so if that isn't the problem, then you now have a spare.

I am surprised so many are suggesting it's a DME relay. While it's a good idea to have a spare on hand and your symptoms are similar, the OBC told you it's the MAF. Maybe it's shot or you just couldn't get it clean enough. One potential source I recall of problems is when you run an oiled filter like K&N.

My '95 993 had almost identical symptoms several years ago. I brought it into the dealer and the diagnostics code told them it was the MAF. While it was in the shop, I discovered rennlist, and learned about the DME relay. I took the car back from the dealer with the original MAF, bought the DME relay, replaced it and -- cured, perfect to this day.

Okay, so maybe my opinion about mid-90's computer technology is overrated....

Have you checked that the car has had the wiring recall done? The symtoms you decribe have been known to be a precursor to wiring loom failure.

Relay was delivered yesterday, put it in last night, but was only able to take it for about a 20 min drive. Did not die once(knock on wood), and seeing how it was struggling to go 1/2 mile the other day, I take this as a good sign(knock on wood).
I will have time this weekend for a bit more driving, so I will leave more info after that (knocking a hole thru wood).
Thanks guys,
Greg
