I pretty much figured on the response that I got in this thread, but thought it was worth asking. Thanks to everyone for their feedback.
I'm going to pass on the car. If I bought it and got screwed, I'd never be able to show my face around here again
I've got another lead on a local car that might pan out anyway.

Good call, logan. The guiding principle that you should have in the forefront of your mind as you drive and evaluate each car is the considerable expense you will incur should you have to fix it, as opposed to having credible evidence that the proper maintenance has been performed (e.g. documented records/receipts that the PO produces up front because he is confident about his car's health).
And as with any car, serious problems can be easily masked by any half-witted and unscrupulous seller or wrench. For your your consideration, do a search on costs for common items: top-end rebuild, clutch, synchros, SAI ports clogged, spark plug and wire replacement, seeping valve-covers, to name just a few. If you know these costs up front, you can use that to balance the cost of purchase should you find a real gem that you like, but may need this or that. Hope this helps you, and best of luck. If it helps, I bought my 97 cab from Euroclassics and they offered to take it to Lufteknic for the PPI. All worked out well. Since they had a flat driving it over to Lufteknic they put 2 new rear tires (Michelin Pilot Sport Rib). I couldn't have been happier in dealing with Euroclassics and Lufteknic. I also spoke with Wayne at Euroclassics and was impressed with his honesty in describing the car's service record.

Why not ask them
To take the '97 C2S over for a PPI at the shop suggested.....These folks are user friendly......
I would suggest getting together on price subject to PPI and put down a deposit as evidence of your good faith......I have known the owner for years and Wayne even longer......Wayne is a straight shooter, paycheck aside.....He has taken care of the last seven porsches I've owned ( only one was purchased from Euroclassics )

I was pretty **** about having my current car checked before commiting, as during my 993 quest I had put down a deposit and PPI'ed another car from a different and unscrupulous "classic car" dealer. That car would have needed a minimum of $6K in work. When I went to Euroclassics they were pretty good about allaying my concerns. I even had them put the car on a lift so I could look under it for oil leaks, torn cv joint boots, etc. They complied without hesitation.

I bought my last car from a Lexus dealer (it was a BMW 740iS) 3000 mi from my house. I waited 4 months to find a silver w/blk interior car with all the options I wanted, but the only one I could find was so far away. I asked them if I could get a PPI at another BMW indie or dealer and they said no, surprisingly. They claimed that anything could happen once it left their dealership and they didn't want to risk it. I was really pissed off about it but a gent from bimmerboard who was extremely knowledgable (he's a board moderator) offered to look at it, drive it, took pics and did a walk around it with me on the phone. He gave it a thumbs up so I bought it sight unseen, and even without a PPI. I also pulled every service record from my local dealer on the car just before I made that decision.
Sometimes, you do luck out, as I did. I don't recommend it, but under unusual circumstances, it can happen for the good. The car was everything it was supposed to be. I had it shipped back here to Maryland from Bellevue WA by Intercity. It was a happy ending.
