Default 3.8 vs. 3.6L engine

Apologies if this has been discussed before - I could not find much with a search.

I'd appreciate perspective on the stock 3.6L engine vs. the Porsche OEM 3.8L upgrade...for a 993 C2S. I'd be interested in hearing about performance differences as well as maintenance/reliability differences between the two. Not specifically concerned about cost/performance issues since this relates to a purchase of a car that already has the upgrade...the $19K 3.8L conversion would not likely be a part of my upgrade path!

If it's done already, buy the car (if everything else checks out). As long as it was built right, there are no differences in maintenance. There is a small increase in hp and torque. Much has been written about this here re. not worth doing unless you're going to optimize cams, intake valves, programming - and even then, it's an expensive upgrade.

IMHO, the increase in performance is so modest that it's not worth paying a lot extra for a 3.8. It's cool for bragging rights, but not much else.

I agree. In the end, you're only talking about .2 liter increase in displacement. Kinda like the difference between having $380 in your pocket instead of $360 LOL!

If a 993 has been maintained well and has the upgrade, great. If a 993 has been maintained well and doesn't have the upgrade, still great!

Enjoy and good luck to you!

Actually it is only a 146cc increase in displacement, however, the compression ratio is higher, and that makes a difference.

Agree, with sentiment, 3.6 is the way to go, no point spending the additional$$$$.....my current and last have been 3.8 (3746 if you must!), gearing makes more difference as far as I can tell.

Imagine spending 1/2 of $19K on racing school. Who will be faster? Just like golf- if you have an extra $500 sitting around, you don't need a carbon/unobantium Big Bertha...get lessons!

More importantly, do we know the car? When you're quoting $19K on a C2S, a specific car comes to mind. If so, it belonged to a friend of mine and I almost bought it in '04.
