Another 964/993 dilemna.
Hello, I'm new to these boards, and looking to buy my first P-car.
I wanted to get your opinion on what car to buy.
I currently drive a VW R32 and Lupo GTi.
The R32 is a track/race car with every aftermarket part installed pushing upwards of 470hp.
The Lupo GTi is a daily driver and occasional track car. It has a ported head with cams and a LSD for safety
Having said that, I plan to keep the 911 relatively stock. (perhaps some OEM spoilers)
Obviously whichever car I choose, it will be no match for my R32 in terms of pure speed. (unless I go crazy with mods)
What I am looking for in a 911 is to learn how to drive a rear-wheel drive car, (will obviously be skipping FR and MR)
a fun-to-drive car on the weekends, and just something is more rewarding in terms of car ownership.
I have narrowed down my choices to a 964 C2 or a 993 C2S.
I personally like the classic looks of the 964, but the smooth lines and rear end of the 993 are stunning.
Given that I will be adding this car to my garage as a 3rd car, which 911 should I buy?

Clarification:
Some of you may be wondering why I am debating a 964
that costs half the price. I can spend that extra money on
maintanence and small mods (RS flywheel, wheels,
exhaust, spoilers) and still have some spare change left.
And I chose not to race the 911 because there's simply too
much competition here in Japan. Cannot imagine how much
money these guys dumped into these things.....
Gotta love air jacks

Since your choices are a 964 C2 and a 993 C2S I would go 993. I was going to say I really don't know much about the 964 but if I got one it would have to be a widebody. I pretty much have love for every 911 from 98 on back!

As for the Porsche choice, I am no mechanic, but I suggest that you do a little research on maintenance of the two types. The 993 changed to self-adjusting valves, so you don't have to do the very costly head rebuild. Someone who has more knowledge on this subject please jump in! Also, the 993 will always have that special status as the last air-cooled 911. Also, don't forget that the 993 has the improved multi-link rear suspension whereas the 964 still has the old-school torsion bar rear suspension that evolved from the Beetle, no disrespect to VW. Sure, you'll be able to spend more if you go with a 964 C2, but the 993 C2S will most likely hold its value better than the 964. Plus, I just love the looks of the wide body and the special twin grille. Having said that, I have not driven a 964 yet, but I am sure that the experience is every bit as fun as owning a 993.
I can tell you that my Beetle can easily keep up with the Porsche and could possibly be faster, and don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Beetle, but it's a modern car and doesn't have that mechanical charm that air-cooled VWs and Porsches have. Even with a 2.5" Techtonics/Borla exhaust, the VW still doesn't have that purr that my 911 has, although I have to admit that I love the sound of the big turbo spooling up.
Anyway, good luck on your choice. I don't think you can really go wrong with either car--it's just a matter of personal choice and some differences in maintenance. Keep us posted and PLEASE post pics of your Lupo GTI and R32!

tada:
I had to make this decision last spring, and the selection depends a lot on the "mission" for the car. In my case, that was touring, so the main reasons for my choice of a 993 were the bigger trunk, allowing my wife and I to bring a bit more stuff, and the multi link rear end, which gives a quieter ride.
You will want to spend some time studying Paul Frere's 911 Story before you finalize your choice.
Good luck and, in any event, they are both good cars.

Thank you all for your input.
First, let me take care of this request
List of major mods for the R32.
Engine: HPA FT465 with Garrett turbine
Chassis: 12 point rollcage
Drivetrain: Front/Rear Peloquin LSDs
Brakes: Front/Rear Alcons
Suspension: Moton Clubsport with Hypercos
There's a whole bunch more but I think you get the idea.
Don't have the most recent engine bay pics right now, but looks like this.

Hi there,
Have you really, really decided not to track the 911? When I bought mine I had lusted after one for 20 years, never thought of modding or tracking it, nor had I done so with my GTi, but then, 2 years later, voila, I was modding and tracking the 911. Knowing what I know about you (from your posts) I'd say that you should consider a 964 or 993 with some track goodies on it already - if you ever decide to track it you'll be that much further ahead.
