I had the same delimma as you when I decided to purchase a 911 early this year. I was originally in the market for a 964 or even an early 80's 911. I really like the classic look of those earlier p-cars. But it is just so hard to find one in good condition..either the history was a bit shady or something else that made me suspicious. I finally found a 993 in perfect condition and the curvy looks and feel of it just slowly grew on me. Although I prefer the rawness of the 964, I think the 993 is raw enough..at least its not a water cooled 996. But the best advise as others have said before is to drive both and see what you like better, and if price is not an issue, get the best condition one you can afford. You cant go wrong with that.

Hi there,
Have you really, really decided not to track the 911? When I bought mine I had lusted after one for 20 years, never thought of modding or tracking it, nor had I done so with my GTi, but then, 2 years later, voila, I was modding and tracking the 911. Knowing what I know about you (from your posts) I'd say that you should consider a 964 or 993 with some track goodies on it already - if you ever decide to track it you'll be that much further ahead.

Hi
Thanks for your advise. Yes, I probaly will be tracking it,
though not as often as my VWs. One of the reasons I am
buying this car is to learn how to drive a rear-wheel drive car.

Thanks so much for the VW pics! Here are some shots of my Beetle. You should be able to recognize the seats--they're R32 seats.
Good luck with your decision. Keep us posted!

Quite frankly, I specifically want a 911 and not any Porsche.
If my only criteria was to "learn about rear-wheel drive
handling" I would buy a E36 M3 over a front-wheel drive, water-cooled Porsche.
