Porsche Services - A dispicable new scheme
Hi,
Most of you know I have a 2007 base Cayman, I came up to 20k miles (first recommended service interval if one can believe it) and we did the services ourself. But now every time I start the car, the service interval reminder light came on. I just called our local Porsche dealers and they said that there is a Porsche directive that they cannot turn it off unless they actually did the service work.
I called my local independent garages and they said they need the PIWIS system to turn off the light and no one has that. Evidenty, Porsche charges $30k for the machine/software and $10k annually for software updates. So now I either pay the dealer to do no work at all, or I live with the light. Is that a rip off or what?
Hang on to your 993s. With the newer models, DYI will be a lost art. Does anyone here have a solution to this problem?

Did you check with other owners here or Pelican? if no real solutions, escalate the issue with the Porsche Rep and see what he says. You may have to pay a "shop" fee for the privilege, but that should be all. And let him know that you will keep the online Porsche community aware of the situation.

The Durametric Tool claims to be capable of setting the service reminder. I bought the enthusiast version so I can't do anyone else's car (limited to two ECU sn). I am not very excited about the tool for the 993 but ... .
See under the feature matrix for the 987, "Special features for this model: Reset service reminder"
Here's a link to to the feature matrix. Durametric

Kudos to Don Wise, Don's Autowerks in Campbell, CA.
I called RMG (Real Mean Garage, Robert M. Grigsby) and they cannot help. Don said come on over and we'll take a look. He hooked up his PC with Durametric Software and in 15 seconds, wiped the message off my dash.
I asked how much I should pay, and he smiled and says: just think of us when you need real work done on your cars. We shook hands and parted friends. What a guy.
No affliliations, yadda yadda yadda, just a very happy customer. If you need TLC in your Porsches, try Don Wise. They have been top notch for years.

Glad you found an honest shop to help you out. Porsche's response to you was ridiculous. And the $10k for software upgrades is way out of line. I guess Porsche even sticks it to their dealers, not just the customers.
I'd still escalate to Porsche USA.

Pong: You probably already are with this group, but I was impressed by their togetherness. On the chance you were not aware, I was attracted to these some guys related their experiences when they held a DIY session at one of the member's house one Saturday (either Sunnyvale or SJ or Campbell, can't remember where). I just remembered how helpful it was to those that attended.

Don is a really great guy....Like my wife said of him when we first met Don.."He's the type of guy we would trust to watch our Grand kids"...honest, straight talker and great mechanic....Hope so...I dropped off the 993 last week for topend....Roger
