"Sport cam" + ECU re-flash performance upgrade?
My engine is out to do the LWF/RS clutch. It's pretty clear that it's also due for a valve job. Ugh.
In discussing these things, my mechanic said something about a "sport cam" and a re-flash of the ECU for a performance enhancement.
I've never heard anyone discuss this. Does anyone have any insight into this?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It would be an excellent idea.
I have 993RS cams in my 3.6 it gives you a little bit of a racy idle, you lose a little down low but gain some up high.
The results from using even wilder cams w/ MOTEC are pretty dramatic. but w/ Motronic you are still limited to what you can get from your chip.
There are no off the shelf aftermarket chips(AFAIK) for your car w/ cams so you would need to have one custom burned. Cyntex used to do that but they are out of business, maybe Protomotive

Any idea what kind of numbers we are talking about with RS cams and proper software?

Speaking only for myself, I don't think cams are worth the effort unless other, complimentary things are done simultaneously. We always install the larger RS intake valves whenever RS cams are installed to take full advantage of what the cams are capable of. Of course, software is altered to suit at the same time.
Other factors such as cam timing and engine condition play a role in the final result. I've seen several 3.6 engines with RS cams, RS valves, good software and proper assembly techniques make 300-309 HP on our engine dyno.
