Yup that's me. I love my 993. I had a good experience with Tim Holt. His cars are a bit pricey, but they are hand-picked and are in excellent condition. Mine had a couple of minor cosmetic flaws, but when I told Tim, he said that they were already factored into the pricey price. He did knock off 2500 bucks off the original price though. Nothing gets by him. I would buy another car from him because I know he's honest and won't pretend his cars are flawless even though they are near flawless. He told me that he picks through the cars he gets and the duds get discarded and end up elsewhere (one can only speculate at who ends up picking them up). He knows his 911s very well, and won't, say push Varioram over non-Varioram. Ask him if you can see his 308GTS signed by Mario Andretti and check out his artwork in the office and bathroom.

I also had my PPI done by Dougherty because they have about 30 years of Porsche experience. Sure, they do a lot of work PPIs for Tim Holt, but I got no feeling that the two were in cahoots. I toured their HUGE facility, and got to see a 993 Cup Car with a Dead Head airbrushed onto the hood! They gave me a 10 page writeup, which included a leakdown and compression test. I spent $1500 bucks for the PPI, oil change, and spark plug change. I was going to do Bilstein HDs and RoW MO30's there, too, but they wanted a GRAND over what I was quoted here in Boston. I opted not to do it obviously.

What I did when I was looking for my car was to fly down and back from Boston in one day. I met Tim, test drove my car and a non-Varioram car, and met with Bill Dougherty and his mechanic Ryan. Once I made my choice on which car I was going to by, I arranged for the car to get picked up by Dougherty for the PPI. Then, I flew down again to pick up the car and drove it home to Boston.

The only mechanical problems on the PPI were the usual weepy spots on the crankcase and valve covers, which are not active oil leaks, as well as a squeaky clutch cable. What would cause this and how do I fix it?

Boston911fan

Thanks for the very extensive explanation. Word of mouth is certainly the best way to get a feel about a dealer.

I spke with him yesterday afternoon and also got a confident sense about his business. I may need to save a little more before I try and buy there though.

Default Holt

I had never owned a Porsche before, and during my 993 search, I was really sweating the SAI stuff, and other technical issues. Tim spent 10 minutes on the phone with me, explaining how he deals with it, putting the issue into perspective, and giving me a bunch of other information on the cars. It was very re-assuring. He seems to me to be in it for the long haul.

Please tell him that Evan referred you. It's worth the extra pennies buying from Tim.

I bought a 1995 C2 Coupe in Slate Grey/Linen w/32k miles for $42k sight unseen, other then the web pictures, in April 2007. Car came with 17" Cup wheels with wheel rash, etc. The wheels consisted of two Porsche OEM and two Italian knock offs. Never was told that.

A premium price for a slightly better than average car. Car had yellowed headlight lenses and horribly fogged over fog lights. When I asked Tim about the headlight lenses, I was told they clean up fairly easily and/or just replace them for "about $90 each". The right fender was poorly repainted and the front bumper was put on poorly as well.

I was told that the carpets and interior were like new. I specifically asked Tim about the carpet and interior because of the lite "linen" interior color and the age of the car. Tim forgot to mention the coffee and/or cola stains in the back seat carpeted areas that never did come out. Asked about the gear shift too, which was also was in terrible shape. The clear guards in front of the wheels were discolored, etc.

My fault in the end for not going to see the car before I purchased it and having a PPI complete. The reason I did not, was because of everything I read about on Rennlist.

I would recommend that you go and see the car first. I understand I am very particular, but the car was not represented in the correct light. Especially for what I paid.

I contacted Tim and let him know about the items I mentioned above, and he offered me nothing.

I too have done business with Holt Motorsports. I agree with rol607: " go and see the car first." And, as many have already indicated, a PPI is a must.

He bought my 88 911 from me when I couldn't sell it locally. Great transaction, fair price.

Guess you don't need to do the search now. Don't ever let it not happen again.

Just kidding of course. Good luck with your future purchase. What exactly, specifically are you looking for?

I am looking for a low mileage(<65K) 964 or 993, black, red or midnight blue preferably either black or tan interior. Oh, and I don't have more than about $30K to spend. SO that is a very selective group of cars that will meet those criteria and be in good shape.

If you get a 993 with <65k miles for <$30k from any specialist dealer, much less Holt's, you will certainly have something to post about!

They do have a very nice 964(black-on-black) for $29.5K right now. So I guess there is a slim chance. I know that I might have to adjust my expectations or seller - but it is nice to dream!!

+1

If you want a car that meets that criteria, you won't find it at a specialist dealer. If you're willing to look, I believe your criteria are within reason, so long as you're thorough and patient.

Pictures on websites do not do a car justice. I flew to Philly to see the car in person, and found a few things that I did not see in the pics--a small scuff mark on the underside of the bumper--very common, and some minor wear on the top. It was a bit disappointing to see these things when they did not appear in the picture, but they were minor, and I had to remind myself that the car was 12 years old...

On that note, I'm going to vent. If 911 owners know that they have low cars with low bumpers, why the hell aren't they more careful when parking? Quite a few cars at Holt had a small scrape. You really have to bend down and poke your head under the car, and it is clear that there was no damage to the spare tire well. It just pissed me off that the previous owner was not more careful. He or she certainly made it a point to not drive it as it only had 20k miles on it, so why wasn't he or she more careful during those few times that the car was driven?
