Nuff,
You can also check out Hawaii Import Parts. I picked up a#993 DME from them about six months ago for $24 $27?, I can't remember the exact amount. You will be surprised at what they stock. They are located off of Ward Avenue across from the Sport's Authority & Ross Store.

Here's the address:

I know exactly where that is - I can almost walk there from work (not quite, but close). I'll go check them out.

BTW, is there a good independent in Honolulu for oil changes, etc?

Motorwerkes - just about two blocks up on the opposite side of Ward Ave from Hawaii Import Parts. That's where I took my 964 before I sold it approx a month ago. I'm suffering from withdrawal symptoms now...

Just DON'T leave the jumper in with the car turned off.
From Clarks Garage, detail info on the DME relay and instructions for the DME Jumper construction and use

Clarks Garage Tip

It's a 944 site but the principles are the same just the location of the actual relay is different.

I have a spare DME relay AND a jumper cable that I made in case things really go south. With the jumper cable the fuel pump is on constantly, so you need to unplug it when you turn off the car, but I know that it's cheap insurance against a bad DME relay.

+1, that's what I have/do. If I remember I'll take a photo of the jumper I made (it's not nearly as long as the one in Clarke's) and I have tags on the ends to remind me what pins they go in. I know, it doesn't matter which end goes in which term but I think this would help me on the side of the road in the middle of the night.

Okay I finally gave in and bought a spare relay. Thanks for the inspiration.

tkx.
With all of this talk about the DME relay, I decided to take a look at the spare that came with my '97 C2.

The relay box has the name "Stribel" on it, and a sticker with the part number "993 615 227 00", the words "FUEL PUMP RELAY" and another number, "898.892".

The relay itself has a number molded onto the top, "944.615.227.00" . Was this relay originally for the 944, and now the one to be used for the 993?

So is this the correct DME relay to have?

Thanks,
Gary

Not 100% certain but my bet would be that they updated the box to reflect the new part number but that the actual part is the "old style" 944 part. It will still work but if it were my car I would order a new relay and make sure the relay itself had the 993 part number. You can keep the 944 relay as your spare if you want though, it will still work fine.

It may also be the prior owner did what I did, ordered the new 993 relay, installed it and used the original 944 relay as the backup/spare (and put it in the 993 box). I have the 3 wire jumper in case that fails.

Thanks Bill, that makes sense. I guess I'll keep it as the spare, then if the one in the car now fails, I'll use the spare just long enough to get the newer one.

That's the part number I had in mine when it failed. Luckily, I had a spare one with the 993 part number.

What is the part number of the relay currently installed in the car? 993. or 944.?

The 944 part number relay was installed in all 944 and all 964, some 993s had them, newest one I've seen was a '97 993 with a 944 part number relay.
The 944 relays have a life of 5 years and then are on borrowed time.
