You guys really have me thinking about a 993. So things to check for on the higher mileage ones are dizzy belt and vent, steering rack, and replaced suspension bits (assuming that means coils and shocks).

I don't mind doing the maintenance. I'm "retiring" from motorcycle racing after a crash at Road A in June. Had a 1990 FZR and a 2004 Ducati. I like wrenching.

Oh, and can you fit kids in the back in booster seats fairly easily? I've seen pix of the boosters in the back, but I looked at an '84 911 today and it looked really tight, although the seats may have been all the way back.

Great forum by the way.

Talking Character is very subjective... :D

Hey Bluejam, your point was well taken, but I'm not so **** retentive about scratches, rock chips, small scratches, creases and blemishes on my 993.

I expect these from regular use (road debris and normal wear and tear) on a high mileage Porsche (how many of us middle aged guys don't have scars and what not).

If you want to spend thousands on minor body work knock yourself out.

Enjoy your day!

Where did you get a rack for $370? That's right up my ally.

A very good point, that could be extended to all areas of the car. If you really want a "no stories" car with no bodywork or paint, and yet somehow it's perfect (maybe the owner only drove on roads with no other cars) you should bring a fat checkbook or a pocket full of four leaf clover. Everything else is on a condition/mileage/price continuum. And the best choice for most people isn't paying a $10k premium for characteristics which are not key to enjoyment of the car, and are also ephemeral.

What happens when your perfect, no stories, high price premium car from Holt's gets keyed at the mall? The insurance may pay for a fine quality repair, but you're only a virgin once...

Mine has 104K miles and has a very good leak down/compression test which was performed about 5-7K miles ago, oil consumpion is a quart every 1500-2000 miles.......it has a strong lively engine with good response and pulls right through the rev band.....in short, dont be concerned about engine milage if a good PPI is done including leakdowns etc.....these engines WILL just go on and on as long as cared for!!

166k well-cared for miles here... pulls strong and no hint of engine issues.

FWIW, I'll provide a data point. My first 993 was a beautiful low-mile (~39k at purchase) black coupe. It was in fabulous shape and looked nearly brand new. I stressed out driving that thing all the time (worried about road rash, door dings, etc., etc.) and spent mucho dinero on high-end tasteful mods to make it almost perfect (to me). Ultimately, it wasn't a car I felt comfortable driving every day and became more of a garage queen toward the end... I just couldn't enjoy it the way I'd intended.

My latest is "long in the tooth", is not perfect, but still beautiful. I don't stress about driving it and am enjoying it more than my last for that very reason. Anyway, just my $.02

My daughter rides to school in the back of my 993 every day. She's 5 but should be able to fit comfortably in the back for another 5 to 7 years!

BTW, I can't believe that you can get 30 mpg in a 993. Best I ever get is 23 or 24.

118K here. Zero trouble since bought in 01. Other than routine maintenance, I've had to replace a batt, an alt, and CV boots. Given that I had tracked her for about 3 years and it's daily driven , I'd say that's stellar ..."Honda-class" reliability, as it were . I am now doing a major maintenance of replacing clutch (and other "while you're in there" stuff), but at 118K miles on the orig disc, I'd say I did well. The moral of the story is get a good PPI from a highly-regarded shop. Other than the normal age-related incidentals, the car is solid and reliable.
