For car shopping a good start is Autotrader.com. Cars.com too but is not as extensive. Check also Rennlist classifieds. For insurance you have the problem that you have no US driving history so expect to pay a lot for the first 6 months (200? 250? a month) and then it should go down afterwards. If your employer have a preferred insurer that can help you, that will be good. Of course this depends on a lot of variables (neighborhood, etc) so you will have to wait until you have all the info in your hands and then ask for quotations.

import a car into the US is a nightmare ...
will cost a fortune ..
i did all the research some months ago ...
i had a pristine 993 with 20.000 miles and decided to sell it , as you have to make so many changes than parts and labor will cost many many $$$

just my research ...

Welcome to Rennlist! Best of luck with your move. It must be a difficult undertaking right now
considering the current global financial storm.

Thanks VM ! At least it is starting to help me understanding the budget.

Eloyex > it is my conclusion ... sell it ... but to buy what when I will be in the U.S. ?

The Brewmeister > you are right ... not ideal at all. The "good" news is I plan to move next fiscal year (next summer) so I hope the economy will be more stable. In terms of future seller (house / car) we are impacted by this world wide "crisis" (the specialist to not want to use this term ...) and I would like to have a minimum impact. In terms of future buyer, I have a different view: buy a house less expensive could not be that bad ... same thing for the car.

Any way, what I do not want is coming here ... and facing a layoff => bye bye the visa so loose everything. That's an other chat directly with my employer ... and I have roughly a year to have warranty and start implementing everything (get cash before coming here) ... to be continued.

Finally my biggest wish will be reality in couple of months. I will move with my son and my wife to north cal !!!! (a dream since 10 years): Santa Clara to be precise.

I no longer have a porsche but I really hope to have one very quickly as soon as we will complete our move.

Just wanted to share this

Congratulations and welcome!

Good thing is that you can buy a 993 here what is probably a lot less than you sold your old car for--and if you go back, it is easier to take the US car to Europe than the European car to the US.

All over, Auto Trader, Cars.com, Ebay, Craigslist.

As far as bringing your car here, yeah, not so much.

25 years out is exempt.

Otherwise you need a letter from Porsche stating the car is an equivalent to a US car that could be legally sold here.

Chances of that happening are probably almost none.

Mainly it's probably no where near to passing CA strict E-testing.

Getting Porsche to certify the car, HAHAHAHA good luck with that one.

And then if you ever do decided to sell it here without it being Federalized you won't be able too.

We get all kinds of South American Polos and other werido stuff here that we have tired to buy but just can't do it legally.

There may be some provisions if you are a temp employee on some kind of VISA but I don't have the first clue about any of that.

Welcome to the US. My wife is French and we have an apartment in Les Arcs. I've driven the mountain roads in your area of France. Hopefully you will not miss your RS and those roads too much Good luck with your move.

Bien à toi !
