Default DME Relay? Help please

My 96 C2 didn't start this morning. The engine turned over but it didn't fire up, kind of like when you're out of gas. I tried a few times and the same. Just to make sure it wasn't the battery I charged it up with a battery charger and still same result.

From reading about similar issues in this forum I am concluding that it is the DME relay but knowing that I am NOT mechanically inclined I wanted to check with you guys before buying a DME relay. The only thing that came to mind other than this is fuses? How do I check if the fuses are fine? Sorry, this may be a dumb question.

Lastly, can I purchase a DME relay in a regular auto parts store or do I have to order from automotion, sunset, P-car dealer?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Franz

Franz, the part number that you will need is 993-615-227-00 Relay List price is $34.55 Sunset Porsche sell it for $23.05 plus shippping. If you are in a rush you can go to your local dealer. Buy it first and open your hood/trunk up front by (below)the windshield their is a plastic cover remove that and on the right side of the car under the cover is a fuse and relay box. The cover of the box has a list and a location for the DME just remove the old one and install the new one. You can do it...

Thanks a lot John. So it looks like DME relay is the right diagnosis. I did open up the relay/fuse box after reading a DIY on DME relay replacement. It does look very simple. I will order it from Sunset and will cross my fingers hoping it is just that.

To verify whether the DME relay is at fault, make up a 3-way series jumper .... with two short pieces of wire and three crimp-on spade tips.
With key off, jump Pin #30 to both #87 and 87b .... these pins are denoted on the relay base - so pick the corresponding slots on the CE panel where the DME relay plugs in.

If the car now runs, it can be driven this way until the relay is replaced - but the jumper MUST be pulled when the car is shutdown.

You should have an extra DME relay in the car anyway, so if it is the relay, order two.

Bill, I'll take you up on your offer - thanks!

Garth, that would be way above my skills but thanks anyways.

And, yes, if it's the relay I'll get two to keep a spare.

Is a good idea to keep a spare one in the glove compartment. There are OEM and aftermarket versions of the DME relay.

I agree on keeping a spare. I have helped three other 993 onwers that have had problems over the past six years. All of them had DME with a 944 part number installed from the factory. I would not like to get nail with this issue when on a trip or driving fun run.

Not sure which of the following facts made me happier today:

1. That I was able to troubleshoot and "fix" my car
2. That the best case scenario came true and it was only a DME relay replacement
3. That I'm part of such a helpful and knowledgeable community like Rennlist

Thanks all for the tips and especially Bill for letting me borrow his spare relay. Car is back up running like it should. Now let me go order a pair of relays...
