Default alternator noise still

I recently been having a load sound coming fro the alternator, thought i would take care of it by putting a rs pulley and the sound was still there, recently went back to the original pulley set up, noise still there. Its annoying with my top down!
What could it be, you know the sound that high pitch when u turn on the lights or keep your finger on the window switch-that sound , but it is a very high pitch. nothing is loose, same sound at idle and more prononce when reving

Are you talking about a mechanical sound (e.g., fan bearing or fan hitting housing) or electrical sound out of speakers? Sounds like you're saying when you use certain electrical appliances you hear it.

If that's the case, probably a ground loop. Results from one voltage source feeding more than one user, with an unintended sink to ground on one of the lines.

Look inside your fan shroud and let us know if there are scratches around a portion of it from the fan blades. If so, you have bearings that are failing - either at the nose of the fan or in the alterntor. I went through this last winter an ended up replacing the alternator and cleaning a few things up...

Has it been slowly getting worse? Can't remember what it sounded like exactly when mine went, but it could be your fan bearing or alternator bearing.

If so, and it's getting pretty bad, watch out - because I do rremember what it sounded like when my fan started hitting the housing. NOT pleasant.

Might have to search for diagnosing threads. If you had noise with RS pulley on, would that mean it was definitely alternator? Don't know how that works - someone else will have to chime in...

dave

PS - best of luck

I would think exactly that, that its the alternator, because the bearings are hub bearings are new with the rs pulley and the alternator is brand new, the old one made same noise

cleaning a few things up. funny.
Quick detour... did you paint your fan shroud? If not, how did you get it looking like that? Mine is out right now and it is clean... but it doesn't look as grey. I won't be able to see it under the intercooler but still...

Back to the thread... johnny, this may not be an electrical noise. It may be the fan ringing against the shroud. You cannot hear a "draw" on the alternator. See Andreas' previous post regarding the marks on the shroud.

Mark,
I painted the fan and the shroud at the same time. Duplicolor hi-temp primer for both, Duplicolor hi-Temp 'Aluminum' for the fan, and Duplicolor hi-temp 'Cast Iron' (or maybe 'Cast Coat') for the shroud. I also gave the fan a few layers of clear. It's held up perfectly since.

Could be brushes in the alternator making the arcing sound. When an armature begins to crap out it causes excesive arcing between the brushes and the armature. How long have you been hearing this noise?
