A few years back, I had my belts replaced...including the alternator belt. When the shop put the new belt on the alternator, they didn't adjust it correctly. Apparently the adjustment procedure for that belt takes a special tool or is not straight forward, or something. The result of the misadjustment was that my alternator bearing was making a "whining" noise when I accelerated. Not really that loud, but consistent.

When you can hear the engine sounds as good as you can on these cars, the slightest variation in the sound is easily noticed. Such was the case with the bearing noise. It wasn't that loud, but it was easily detectable. I'll bet you have an altenator bearing going bad.

Check the fan bearing hub located on the alternator shaft. These commonly are damaged/worn and may cause noise and/or cause the belts to fail. 964.106.051.30 When you are replacing the alternator at 100K, this bearing also has 100K wear.
