Default Air conditioning cuts in and out?

I was driving back from the Nethercutt Collection in Sylmar during a particularly hot afternoon a couple weeks back.

I started out running Max A/C (both buttons) fan speed 4, then backed it off to regular A/C, fan speed 4. Things got more and more comfortable. By the time I got home 30 minutes/miles later, I was to fan speed 2.

Every few minutes, the fans (or the whole system?) would shut down completely for between .25 and 2 seconds, then come back on just as it was just fine. This seemed to happen with less and less frequency as the trip went on. Overall, the cabin cools down fine, it's just a little annoying.

Any idea what's happening and what can be done?

Probably the resistor for the AC radiator has gone, believe is similar to the one on the oil cooler on the other side.., probably someone will chime in with more accurate info..

Thanks! I have been told that both of my resistors are indeed gone.

I guess I should have my known defects repaired before I request technical assistance!

I've the same problem, with the fan cutting in & out. It seems like a hard tap on the fan speed **** often brings the fan back to life..... So, I've been thinking I've got loose connections in the back of the CCU (climate control unit) or a bad fan control **** in the CCU.....but you guys think it might be the AC radiator resistors in some other part of the car?

Then why does my thunking on it "seem" to work??? Or is it that if I tap long enough it will come back on its own anyway.....and it just seems like I've "fixed" it?

Thanks!

Robin knows about this -- its something to do with dust on the thermostat inside the climate control box or something.... I have the same problem, as he did in his old C2.

I had the same problem and sprayed some contact cleaner behind the plastic know.
That fixed the problem.
Give this a try first before changing the resistors.

At 51K, I have fairly low miles, so my car may indeed be "dusty."
Do you mean electrical contact cleaner?
Is that like "dust off" that photographers use or is it more liquidy?
Anyone have a photo or diagram of this area or the CCU?
I'm inclined to use a dust brush and vacuum before I blow stuff around...

THANKS!!! That's a much easier fix than pulling the whole CCU out...
(%$#@...I have to do that anyways soon to fix the squeaky CCU fan in the back....rats...)

Yes, he means Electrical Contact Cleaner (aka TV Tuner Cleaner, the old school name, since its been a while since TV's have had ***** to turn...). Since it is a liquid it can penetrate into the potentiometer/switch that is attached to the **** and loosen up the gunk, dust, grease, oxidation, etc inside the switch. You won't be able to get in there with a dust brush & vacuum as you suggest. Its some kind of non-conductive suff that was made for this application.

Cheers,

Default a/c cutting in and out

My system has this problem once and a while. So you spray contact cleaner in behind the fan speed ****?

TIA.

I also have this issue. Is there an easy way to remove the unit?

Rinty,
I think you've got it correct. I haven't gotten to do it yet, but I'm going to pull out the cleaner stuff now so I remember....

99three,
You don't need to pull the CCU for the fix of the AC cutting in/out. Just pull off the **** and squirt in the cleaner, as per air eater's post.

Here's the CCU squeaky fan fix, if that's the issue you are trying to fix.

Thanks Keith! I believe the resistor needs to be replaced since I tested the oil cooler resistor and it was gone too.

Sorry, I'm still struggling with this procedure. To remove the fan speed ****, you just pull? Will that expose something beyond the shaft on which the **** mounts, or do I need to tear a little deeper into the HVAC controls?

As far as the actual cleaner goes, it looks like Auto Zone, CSK and Napa all have CRC 5103 for $5 - $6:

Sounds like the resistor. Its a major PITA to replace.
