i am not mike obviously but have driven moton'd C6Z06 on track. it's steering is not as sharp as GT3, but handling is just as good. much faster more tq, and can corner as well as ANY porsches. brakes need upgrade, but even after ap or brembo, it's still cheaper than GT3. the only thing that's subpar is int. fit/finish. the seats are not very good. but i put recaro in all my nice cars anyways.

The Z06 is definitely a bargain right now. I rode in one and it was outstanding. Great sound.
The ZR-1 is in all the car mags this month. Even more of a beast. But to me, loses big time in the styling dept. Too many scoops and that clear cover for the air cleaner is stupid. I really don't know else to describe it....
Much rather have a Z06.

OK, so a vette isn't a 911 ...big surprise. But then again, why must it always be compared to one? Can't the question "to vette or not to vette" be answered without turning the discussion into what a 911 can do... I LOVE my Porsches, immensely, as in never want to part with them. But that doesn't negate the possibility of having another fine performance car, now does it.
A Z06 in C5 or C6 is a fast, competent car on the street. And for the track, all you need is a few things (e.g. upgraded brakes) and you can be verrry fast. The naysayers may not like it for being "just a vette," but they cannot deny it IS a formidable car with good power, decent weight, and decent handling. Bang-for-buck is what I think Pong was getting at with the orig post, and this the Z06 has in spades. And a C5 Z06 used is a crazy bargain. Now I personally would never own a vette, simply because it's not my cup o tea, but I sure as heck still respect them, especially ripping up track tarmac.

I expect that there's a measure of tounge-in-cheek, but what's all this "great divide" and "dark side" BS? Have any of us driven nothing but P-cars all his life? Does having some Detroit iron in the garage somehow contaminate your Porsche mojo? Sorry, but I'm a car guy first, and a Porschephile second.
That said, before I bought my car, a buddy pointed me to Chevy's $39,999 promo on brand new base model C6. Nice car, but no substitute for a 993. Would I love to have one? Sure. One that's a year old? Even more so...I love bargains! Realistically, with a growing family, something with a real back seat comes to mind, and a GTO would be cool...if I could find one. But I also try to mitigate depreciation, so an early Chevelle convertible would be even better, but values on vintage muscle are so nutty now.

Why do you think he sold it so cheap? The lowest asking price on a Z06 I can find on autotrader is low $50k's. How many miles? Perhaps these prices are yet to reflect the fact that a brand new one could be had for $60k. Z06 was a lot of car for the money and it looks like things are getting even better for potential buyers.

From the 08s on, the highest up-grade package gives you the equivalence of full leather in a Porsche. Read: leather dash, door panels etc. You can even have 2 tone seats.
The seats are the same throughout, so the $$$$ spent are purely on interior leather finishes. Not the best use of up-grade $$$$ IMHO. It does look nice though.

When ordering a MY00 Boxster 986 years ago (wife's) we optioned that Porsche with plenty of leather if only (as many of you know) the standard interior plastics (986/996) are abysmal ~ Smart move by Chevy to offer an interior upgrade all the while collecting additional margin. Madam X sees a Chevy dealer in my future (just for kicks) for a Z06 test drive ~ FWIW, using the chevy.com site to build a MY08 Z06, a silver Z06 with Navi, 6sp manual, upgrade leather, etc., ranged in the high $70s. Pick up a slightly used MY07; say 10K miles or less, one year old, etc., (with plenty of GM warranty remaining) for $40K or so... Now you're talk’ in. Maybe even for less $ - what has the market been saying I wonder.

Mike,
I specifically talked about the 08s, as there are significant improvements in the shifter precision/feel and other areas in the 08. And with the all-leather interior, Chevy intends to address the 2 most common complaints about the Vette.
The 08 is a much better car than the 07s and before.
