This is cheap horsepower... and unlike a Pcar, you can get a Chevy fixed in about any town in America...

Chevrolet just dropped the ZR1 into the market at $105K and in doing so, reduced the Z06 to an "also ran." If you're a Vette fan, the ZR1 is now the "gotta have" car now, and the Z06 is "just" a Z06 and prices on those cars will probably drop a little , particularly if the economy stays in the toilet. In the Vette world, "mine is bigger than yours" is everything.

You know...I'm not a track guy, but I do very much enjoy going to the track and watching cars...DE events, races, etc...the Barber Motorsports Track is about 10 miles from my house.

I have to say, I've hardly ever seen a vette on the track that didn't look really good, sound really really good, and really seem to be haulin' a$$. I've also driven a few of them and they don't really do much for me. They feel kinda big and heavy compared to my 993. But I am a fan of the look.

I've spent a day with the current Z06 on the track. A terrific car.

No better performance value out there.

Mike,

Was that a stock Z06, or with mods? Can you please elaborate on what you like, and what you don't like? Most interested in what you think about the seats.

Thanks.

Being raised around American cars (my dad was an Oldsmobile man), I told myself I would never own an American car if I could help it due to longevity issues, quality, fit and finish, etc. But that was then, and this is now.

I gotta say, the C6 Z06 is really something. I've driven one, and it's a complete dr. jekyll & mr. hyde ride, which i love. So much nicer than the C5's, it features most amenities or availabilities of a Cadillac, including touchscreen nav, satellite radio, keyless start, auto climate control, etc, and an American V8 sound that makes hairs stand on end at WOT. Power as to be expected is plenty. An equivalent domestic rival would be a Viper, and though fun with gobs of torque, it still feels like driving a kit car or some sort of truck, with fit and finish left to be desired.

I agree, if one were to go to the darkside, this would be a serious consideration. Great bang for buck. Now, just have to wait until they drop to the price point of C5 Z06's down the road....

What? You don't appreciate your 993 more as time passes?

If we're talking about new ones, depreciation isn't going to be a factor pushing you one way or another for several years. If we're talking about older models, particularly getting back to the air-cooled Porsches, they are leveling out at a higher price point than the vettes will for sure. I'm not sure the 993s are at the bottom of their range yet, but I suspect they are getting close. That is obviously if you don't just go trash it and rack up hundreds of thousands of miles.

I have been very fortunate to have been on both sides of the great divide. Have owned many Porsches and very much miss my 95 Cab. The heavily optioned C6 I purchased for $44,800, with all the crazy electronics including heads-up display, etc., continues to bring me lots of smiles. It is the contemporary muscle car and those Billy Boat Route 66s wake up the 400 ponies.

The handling is not as razor sharp as my former Carreras. But the C6 is not too shabby either. One big advantage for the C6 is maintenance costs. My total out of pocket costs for maintaining the car for the 42 months I have owned the C6 has been $0. Yep....free all changes by my dealer (instead of the $250 I used to pay). Opps...I did pay $900 for the Route 66s. A few early stage issues that a TSB needed to correct but otherwise trouble free.

For all of us enthusiasts who are passionate about great cars, the C6, Z06 and now the ZR1 are pretty damn nice alternatives.....just for change! $60,000 for a new Z06 is a steal.

Wishing everyone a great Labor Day weekend and put some miles on those cars.

Mark

Looked at mobile.de yesterday. You can get a good Mk II GT3 for the price of a good 993 C4S/C2S.

Looked at 993 RS's too... way more than before. Euros 100K will not even get you a return phone call. The aircoolers are going UP!! Water pumpers are going down fast except the GT3/996/997 turbos.

As a former P owner, this does not matter much but FWIW, I am looking for a GT3...
