I have the dreaded door check strap failure. I want to have it repaired before it gets any worse. Do you have a shop to recommend? Ideally I would like to get it repaired in the Thousand Oaks area, but I want it done right. Maybe the South Bay of LA – I work in Torrance. Thanks.

I had mine done just last week. They did the weld from the outside and repainted. The end result is, unless you point it out no one would ever know.
I also did Chris's mod where I shaved the little rubber things inside the check strap mech just to take some weight off.
Now the door glides smooth as and no signs (yet) of clicking.
Thats a design floor that Porsche surley should have sorted out over the years.
FWIW it cost me $280NZ for the job. About $200US.

Tim,
Call Jason who is the owner of RS Enterprises in Ventura. Go by and check out the shop and see what you think. He fixed mine and it came out great.

2nd the request for a shop in South Bay.
Mine is a '86 911--had one estimate a couple yrs ago for $1000. Thought that was kinda high.
Is the door stay problem common on earlier 911's (mine) same as problem on 993's?

MIK 911,
Unless the strap ripped through the sheetmetal, this is a DIY in the 911. Even I did it and I'm not all that mechanically inclined (and have crappy tools). Pelican sells replacement straps. They bolt on. The trick is learning how to take the old one off. There is a small metal collar behind the nut. Once you pop it off, the strap should come right off with a long neck socket wrench.

The strap's attachment anchor inside the door is starting to rip/tear from the door's sheet metal. Will the "reinforcement plate" sold at Pelican Parts fix this? or will I need a body shop?

MIK 911,
If I understand you correctly, there has been no damage to the body of the car. If so, Pelican's replacement strap will work fine. If it is starting to rip the sheetmetal itself, then you will want to use the reinforcement version. Call Pelican, they are very helpful. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...pg9.htm#item48

If their is no damage on the attachment ends of the strap can the strap just be replaced? Can you visually see if the mount ends are damaged? I've read the threads and I'm still not clear if the major repair is a given when the door starts clicking? Mine just started this weekend.

When mine started clicking, I tried ot figure out where it was coming from. Look closely at the attachement to the body while opening the door. If the bracket moves relative to the door frame, then you need that bracket welded to the body. Not a DIY unless you are handy with a TIG welder and paint. If the bracket is not moving and the sound is cmoing from inside the door, then it is a checkstrap issue that is relatively easy to fix.

I have had EPR Collision in Camarillo do all the paint and body work on Rufus (and before that on Waldo). Ed Palmer (the owner and Porsche-aholic) did a strap repair on Rufus. He does great work, but I've moved, and have not kept in touch. Highly recommended... if he's still there.
I've heard only great things about Jason in Ventura, but never tested him out.

As for the Southbay...Tony Callas, and only Tony Callas of Callas Rennsport:-)
I have yet to find anything out here in this neck of the woods. I just make a day of it and take my car down to Tony.
