Thanks Jerry for the details extraordinaire ~ in my 993 the smell of gas it seems to come and go. I now know where to start with another weekend car task.

One more thing I would like to suggest. When you remove the carbon filter Expansion Tank, turn it over and you will see a small hose. There is a clamp on each end of this hose. Give each clamp a 1/2 turn too.

Mine started smelling after I replaced my A/C expansion valve.
No way I could access the valve without removing the firewall, and also moving that top expansion tank a few inches forward.
I have not found the culprit just yet.

Try tightening those hoses and see if the smell goes away. Others have told me that they have just replaced the expansion tank and hoses and that solved the problem for them.
GOOD LUCK!
Hope to hear from you soon!

Hey Jerry - just imported my car and the shipping company had completely drained the fuel tank.
I filled up the car and when I drove off the car smelt terrible...super strong odor coming from the front of the car. I really notice it when I'm driving and not idling.
I'll check your recommendations this weekend...

CamsPorsche,
Please keep us posted regarding the fuel smell.
You do not want a fuel leak (smell) while you are driving or a smell in the garage while it is sitting in the garage. My fuel smell was only in the front trunk after the car had sat for a day or more in the garage. No fuel smell in the garage and no smell while driving the car. The smell would migrate to the cabin over a few days while in the garage through the vent systems.
I will post more later regarding a fix for this issue.
Best,
Jerry

Thanks Jerry, I had/have the exact same experience with regards to the circumstances surrounding the where and when of the fuel smell. I was cracking the trunk lid whenever leaving the car for more than a day or two, to allow fresh air to flow in and out...but a permanent fix is always the goal.
I'm confident your procedure will go a long way to solving my issue!
Thanks for posting,

There's also an electrical noise (constant even when car is off) coming from the dash so both items are serious and need diagnosing.
I'll let everyone know what it is in due course.
