Default Trip odometer broken

Just fill it up today when I noticed that I only made 35 mi. with the last tank of gas...Something is wrong hmmmmm... I reset the trip odo drove it for a while but the indicator still shows 0000.I always reset it while the car is still but I guess everything ages and eventually stops working. So anybody experienced the same ?I am thinking in replacing the main odo gear as well since my car has 78k mi and it will fail sooner or later. Thanks!

There is only one gear that is prone to failure as far as I know. Are you sure that your odometer still works? I just repaired mine at 64K using the DIY instructions I found on this forum. I bought the gear from the website they recommended. It's not too hard. The most difficult part was separating the housing from the trim ring.

I doubt you odo is working as it's the same gear that operates both the odo and trip odo. Yours is broken ...replace it as per Robin's site. That guy who sells the gears (Jeff, IIRC) is very helpful and answers emails practically immediately. As Matt said, simple DIY and save yourself serious dough from sending it in.

My trip and odometer work. Just the button on the trip is busted...go figure!

This may be fixable on a DIY basis as the mechanism can be seen when dismantling for the odometer gear change.

I have the exact same condition as Scat, the OP. All my numbers are turning just fine (for now), but the reset shaft has no effect on the trip odo.

So I probably don't "need" new gears (or just the "E15" gear from odometergears.com) but I do need to get in there to re-connect the reset shaft/button somehow, and at that point, all together now, "while I'm in there," I guess I should do at least the E15 gear.

Has anyone bothered to replace the other "16 tooth small pod" as well? It doubles the cost from $25 to $50!

BTW- I got here from the new lame search by just searching for "odometer" in the 993 board only.

Wow this is uncanny, this just happened to me! Talk about "johnny on the spot" scat. Speedometer workie, odometer no workie. From the look of things and what you guys are saying, it should be fairly easy fix... hopefully... I was worried about all the crap I might have had to do get this rectified. Thanks for the help everyone.

Just get yourself a nice, clean, quiet spot to work with no interruptions. Suggest putting a clean towel down on work surface. Matt777 is correct...Take it nice & EZ seperating the hsg. from the trim ring. Don't rush it.

I replaced both gears. Yes, it doubles the parts cost, but the labor cost is the same! Might as well replace both while you're in there.

FWIW, I have never heard of anyone with the "other" gear broken. That said, I bought both because:

a)Jason said it happens, which is why he makes it
b)the part is available and just too convenient to order along with the other one
c) I don't want to "go in there" again

That was my reasoning. And yes, it is that easy, but do take your time, work carefully, and note how things are "put together" before taking it apart. Working over a clean towel is a def plus.

Mine got stuck once, I just pushed it in again, then it started to work again.

I had this happen in my 964. First my shop replaced the gear and of course it worked on tester and about a day after putting it back ion. Pulled it again and then was told it was the stepping motor in the speedo. At that point I just picked up a used one with close to actual milage and put it in. Here's hoping it is just the gear.
