Default Belt question

I don't have a pic, but just above the engine fan, there is a little silver wheel up against the innermost belt...I think called a fan belt follower. I noticed it doesn't spin. Is it supposed to?

I think what you're referring to is the sensor that lights up your dash warning lamp should that belt snap ...a HUGE deal, of course, since that belt drives your cooling fan.

No, it should not spin freely on its own, if that's your question. It is spring-loaded and should ride lightly against the belt's outer side. Not an expensive part should you need to replace yours ...pretty common, failure, BTW.

I have the same issue on mine. Not quite touching the belt. No dash warning light is on, either.

Slightly different issue...I didn't explain well. It is resting against the belt, but as it is round, looks like the little silver round belt follower should be spinning as the belt goes by it. Instead it just sits there stationary, not spinning. Should the belt follower be spinning as it rests up against the belt?

Since you say its silver, I have a feeling you are seeing the bearing. There is a black plastic roller that the bearing sits in. This has happened before where the plastic roller comes apart leaving only the bearing to do the job.

Is that all you see, the bearing?

Well now THAT makes sense to me! I simply can't think of any silver wheel-like thingie near the belt area other than that sensor. Chris strikes again!

BTW...anyone know what that is called or what the part number is, and whether the siliver bearing thing should be spinning or if the plastic spins around it?

Since it sounds like the small plastic wheel vaporized, you'll need to order a new sensor. Just call Sunset Porsche and describe the part - they'll know what you need. The whole assembly is about $70.

Thx guys. Don't I just need a new wheel? There hasn't been a warning light on my dash or anything...so...new sensor?
