Gear crunch
Hi all,
I have a c2s that I bought about a month ago (pics to follow). I cant believe how amazing this car is, both to drive and just look at. It has 107k miles with a huge folder of history. No leaks and runs nice and tight. The only thing I've noticed is that from cold when I change into second I get a slight crunch, if I change very slowly no crunch. This only happens from first to second.
Should I be worried?

These transmissions are not meant for speedshifting. Take it easy during your gear changing and the transmission should prove very robust.

Mine does the same thing when cold. I just blip the throttle a little when shifting and it slips into 2 without any effort. When warm, there is no "crunching" on mine. I don't drag people off the stoplight so I don't worry about speedshifting. Tranny shifts real nice when you're smooth.

Thanks guys, thats put me at ease. There are so many little quirks that are normal with these cars that as a new owner the common things can freak you out.
Thanks again

I am sure we all have learned to give our 993's that pregnant pause between gears. Recently I had my transmission fluid changed and added Redline Redline 75W-90NS, which has no friction modifiers. The Redline instructions suggest adding a small amount of friction modifier but the installing garage suggest none be added. My transmission shifts "much" better now. Well worth the $.

When I got my car 4 years ago and first experienced this problem, I remember someone posted something about saying "paycheck" in between double-clutching. It stayed with me! You should be fine in 5 to 10 minutes.

"Double clutching" is a method used to match engine and transmission RPM on downshifts. Say you're in 4th gear at the upper end of the RPM scale for 4th and you are approaching a much slower 3rd gear turn. It goes like this:
1. 4th gear - Clutch in - Shifter to neutral
2. Clutch out in neutral - Rev engine to appropriate RPM
3. Clutch in - Shift to 3rd - Clutch out
When done properly and well, all of this takes place much faster than you can read this sentence.
If you ever at a track, standing at a turn that requires hard braking, you'll hear the drivers double clutch...As they go by slowing for the turn you'll hear that marvelous "Whoop-Daaah-Whoop-Daaah" as they work down through the gears.

I am about to purchase some Mobil Delvac for this exact reason... I get some crunching/notchiness into third gear.
Excuse the ignorance, but how much should I order? I.E. how much do our gearboxes hold? Yes I am being lazy, I know I could look it up in the manual
thanks

mrsullivan: If you do a search on this topic you will find that many of us have tried a number of different trani fluids to try to improve shifting. As far as I can tell the Redline does the trick better than any other fluid. Good luck.

Jonathan,
Are you going to do the transmission fluid yourself or are you having a mechanic do it? I had Mayos do mine a while back but I would like to watch someone do it just to see it.

I used to use the double clutching up technique on my old '86 Subaru GL when it had sat overnight at - 20 C or colder. Works well. Sometimes I'd have to do it from second to third as well.
I've only had my 993 a few weeks, but I've noticed it likes "deliberate" shifts. I'm still working on getting 3 - 4 just right, but it's coming.
