What is the finish on this metal?
On to new projects: What do you call the finish on this metal and has anyone here been crazy enough to try and fabricate or replace the dash of a 993 with something like it.

Engine Turned 993 Dash
Well i like it - and after mark and cs posted above i did a google search and found that same website with the pictures above on the st louis and that dash above in Flatix911s posting.
I'm thinking of having one done. but maybe instead of the veneer like the carbon dash that fits our 993s maybe we'll have the dash itself remanufactures like this and find some nice bezels like this below. i think the old school look in a black car is the right look & a 993 dash is pretty flat and basic. bet it could be done.
anyone else want to go along for the ride?

I like engine turning on classics and in watches (rgmwatches.com/engine.html) but think it's a little over the top for a 911. It makes me think of lots of cars from the 70s:

At first I felt it would seem a little anachronistic and contrived in the 993 interior. The dash with the vinyl or leather trim looks "finished." Carbon add-ons and metal trim rings just seem like trinkets because they serve no real purpose.
In aformentioned classic cars there was no other great option for the dash material. On the 993 a finish like that would look good on a detailed part of the engine or track floorboards.
However, if you do your plan where the finish is applied to the actual dash board instead of an overlay then I think it would look good. I'd be concerned about reflectivity though. Maybe a darker metal would like nice. Titanium anyone? Can you anodize aluminum darker after adding this finish?

Ed,
The last thing in the universe i need is more of the 70s. I was 10 in 75 and i am either the very first genXer or the very last baby boomer. The current 70s revival is most annoying to me. I do remember growing up around a few hot "older girls" in bell bottoms... that part wasn't so bad.
yeah that electric yellow plastic looking engine-turned-"like" finish is not exactly what i had in mind.
I have an opposite impression of this material. I think it takes you back to the hand made era of cars. On that last photo i posted, you don't think that doing just the dash with a quality job that looks hand made, flat with bezels that are not cheap covers but actual polished stainless... looks retro enough to bypass the 70s and get you someplace closer to the 30s/40s.
i mean honestly, that interior on the 993 was 20 years old when it was new in 1995, pushing it back a few years earlier might not be so difficult... i'm into the hot rods these days so maybe its my fad... i drive my cab vs track it so sitting in it and looking around is important.
we'll have to think about it a little. the 70s is NOT the look we're after. but now that someone mentioned it, maybe the fan on the 993 should get a dose too. but then we'll stop.

Ah, same age! The pic is of a Cosworth Vega, which I remember having a particularly nasty finish - sorry for the shock :-)
I'm sure you can find someone to fabricate a gauge surround with the right sort of lip and have it turned rather than use an applique. I'm still thinking it'll be out of place with the rest of the interior (which is about as old as we are, BTW). If you made it a theme like CF it might be really cool, though. Life's too short to worry about what other people think, go forth and start rose turning if it works for you :-)
I see the 911 interior as a terrific anachronism and enjoy both its 60s-ness and the clean functionality of mid-century race cars and aircraft:
