Default 2008 PCGB Speed Championship: 1st event win for 9m at Croft

Here is the link to the in-car movie footage from my 993RS CS at the opening round of the 2008 Porsche Club GB Speed Championship:

http://www.ninemeister.com/jon/movies.html

The event took place at the superb Croft circuit near Darlington on Easter Monday - no surprise that it was very cold with snow flurries all day. Luckily the event stayed mainly dry although the low track temperature meant that our list 1B tyres struggled to find grip and bends that I would usually take absolutely flat (Jim Clark Esses, Barcroft) were reduced to a lift off on entry.

The RAC MSA official timing system threw a fit and managed to speed up its internal clock by over 50% (51-52% approx) so the times given were not accurate. As a guide though, the previous best for the Porsche class stood at 85.98 seconds, timing off the camera I made my run to be in the order of 85.9 to 86.0 although I was given a time of 86.3s. I won by over 5 seconds from my nearest rival.

So, with the lower grip levels than is usual, at least it proved (to me) that the new 4.0 litre engine is doing its stuff. If you look closely you can see the speedo needle off the line (standard 993 mph speedo) and work it out, with the gearing I have it will be doing around 54mph in 1st and 88mph in 2nd at the limit, so you should be able to measure a 0-80 or maybe a 0-90 time before the first bend. 0-100 would be around 8-9 seconds depending on launch, but I don't think I get to 100 before braking for the first bend.

I know we get a lot of stick about the "unbelieveable" performance of our engines, so perhaps I should also mention in passing that we built a similar 4.0 litre engine for a customer in South Africa recently, only without the new high lift camshafts that are in my motor. This is the copy of the email I received yesterday:
"Just to let you know I finally raced my car with the new engine this weekend. The car was wonderful and I was more than 1.5 seconds faster than the 996 cup cars. Everybody seems to think my driving improved tremendously since our last race meeting!"
Nuff said?

My next non-Championship event is on 3rd/4th of May at the new Anglesey circuit which unfortunately clashes with the second round at Shelsley Walsh Hillclimb. I'm doing the circuit because there is a trackday on the Friday followed by two Sprints on the Saturday and Sunday. For the two events they use different circuit configurations, so I'm expecting to get loads of track time and hopefully be able to dial in the new 9m/KW Motorsport suspension properly. If I did the hillclimb I would probably only get 5 x 30 second runs up the hill over the two days - hence why I'm missing the chance to score more points.

With a bit of luck I will also be using the new in-car double camera set-up, watch this space to see how it all worked out. Also keep a look out for an article on the car in Total 911 Magazine, one of their journo's came out in it at a recent Oulton Park RS trackday - I think he was suitably impressed at how easily it hunted down and passed a well driven 510hp 993 turbo....

Hey Andrew, thanks for the photos, you should have come over for a chat in the paddock.

For anyone who did not attend, the photos are from the Sunday of the Lancashire & Cheshire Car Club's 3rd/4th May sprint meeting at the new Anglesey National circuit. Despite the photos showing otherwise, we all had an interesting day fighting the weather which started dry for the first 20 cars or so, then absolutely threw it down until just after lunch, then eventually stopped raining enough to give us a dry(ish) line to have a go at. In the end it all worked out well for me - by taking my life into my own hands on the last run, I gave it my all on a drying track and came away with the fastest time of the day from all 65 competitors - which included a smattering of single seaters and specialist sports racers. Not bad for a 1240kg car/driver combination on road legal tyres! What's more I also managed to win the weekend award for the best performance over the two days of competition, which was a great surprise as I would have been happy with a class win! I'll post the videos of the two days as soon as I can.

The car is running with the new 9m equal length header package on it's 4.0 litre 9m engine, but the bit that you can hear the most from inside the car is the 9m taper bore individual throttle body intake system.

Brief spec on the engine which is built from all 9m Racing production parts is:

80mm crank, steel rods, GT3 oil pump
103mm slipper pistons & cylinders, 13.4:1
Billet heads, 50/42.5mm valves
High lift race cams, 14.6mm intake lift, 14mm exhaust lift
Billet steel cam adjustable cam followers
ITB intake, foam filters
Header & silencer system (split flow)
Motec M600 ecu

Do a search on the 993 and 964 forums and you will find all the details on the headers and engine. Glad you like it!

If you want to see a movie of the car from outside, Tony Bray has taken some superb footage at Longleat Hillclimb last year. To view it you will have to go to www.brayspeed.co.uk and register, then look up the 2007 section and you will find my car. The spec last year is not quite the same, the cams were an interim profile and limited my revs to 7400 rather than the 8000 I run now, but you will clearly see how fast the car accelerates (uphill.....).

I'll get in touch with Tony and see if he'll send me the movie to include on our website.

Colin, Thanks. Although, for those of us on this side of the pond can only drool about having the 9m parts in our cars, I love the updates and videos...one day...one day.

Cheers Dan, you'll see them over there soon enough. I do keep working on Geoffrey to sell his 3.8 and fit a similar 4.0 litre in his 964RSR, but whilst he's nibbling at the hook he's still reluctant to take the first big bite!
