All polk MMs are 2.7 Ohms. I did two cars (front and rear), and no problem so far.

I am using the crappy stock head unit in the Integra, and it sounds better than in the Porsche! It has half the power of the Porsche's Alpine HU, but I was able to fit some bigger speakers in the front (6.5s). The increased size and larger doors made all the difference.

The sound would obviously probably be better with a powerful amp, but it is currently still better than stock. Polk said they tested their speakers with many low RMS factory installed head units, and never had a problem.

I don't think 4 ohms would overload a factory nokia amp.

Cheers,

I want to thank Harlin (H.H.Chinn) for his suggestion on the Polk db461. I installed a pair and they work great. The stock speakers weren't in quite as bad shape as his were but they were bad enough. Ground down the frame w/ my Dremel and works great.

On another thread with (I think Noah) has problems with sound output. I had just the opposite, I had put the fader to +1 bias to the rear and after the swap had to put the fader to +1 to the front to balance it out. I will upgrade the fronts sometime in the future.

My system is the stock/base (non HiFi) system, now driven by a CDR-220.
The original speakers were Nokia 12 ohm, the new Polks are 4 ohm.

Thanks again Harlan.

I'm about to launch my replacement (I've got Blaupunkt GTx 462 speakers that drop right into the mounting plate without modification), but have a concern the lower resistance speakers might cause a power amp overload condition.
No problem whatsoever with mine going to 4 ohms. I switched to 4 ohm speakers on my prior 993 cab and they were still working fine after 3 yrs.

I don't think you'll have a problem unless you try to run 2 ohm speakers, for those you'll need one of the newer aftermarket amps.

I installed my POLK db461 on the rear deck today. It took about 45 minutes and that included soldering the factory connectors. Rather than dremel the frame, I flipped it over, snapped it on, screwed in the speakers and snapped on the factory grills (sits virtually). No dremel required. A definite improvement over stock and a nice complement to the FOCAL 165s I put in the doors a couple months back.

I didn't have to do any modification and had no depth issues. Simply pulled factory grill, removed screw holding factory speakers, removed speakers, attached connectors, new speakers in, inverted trim ring and placed over speaker, screwed in, snapped grill back on.

Great DIY Harlan. 5 years on and I just did the same thing (polks/dremmel trim the spacers) to my car and it sounds a world different and looks 100% oe to boot. Thanks!

I did find these neat connectors at crutchfield that let you just connect the speakers directly to your old speaker plug - no cutting/crimping/soldering req. just plug and play for anyone else doing this update. Made it even easier.

Item # 12071017 $9.99 for 2. Free if you buy your speakers from Crutchfield. I didn't price their speakers...

Just completed fronts and rears. Went for a Polk DXi 525 2 way speakers in the front and these exact speakers for the rear. Couldn't have done it without this DIY. Thanks a million. Took 3 hours start to finish. The sound its just wonderful. The old speakers had disintegrated in an alarming way over the last 20ish years. I ended up talking out the screws for the rear deck and pulling it forward about 6 inches to get the innermost screws on the rear speakers. I am covered in flecks of once molten plastic from the dremmeling but looking forward to going out for a drive to hear the difference on the road.

Awesome stuff!

This is the OE rear speaker, the grill is glued on.

Size is 8.25" x 5.5", it extends 1 5/8" below the parcel shelf.

What did you replace the OEM component speaker with?

I used Oz audio Vector 4x6 plates, they dropped right in, and I was able to use the original grill over the top.

I have the Hi-Fi rear speaker that is 8.25" x 5.5" and I am looking for a replacement to keep the OEM grill.

I believe X50type used oem speakers for replacement and was very happy with them. He does have the hifi like you. The rest of the posts in this thread are all re the base stereo system, so that was alittle of a gear change. That happens quite a bit in these speaker threads...
