Default HELP A NEWBIE!

Gentlemen,

I am looking to enter the P-car world and am seeking some advice. I am looking at a 1997 Black on Tan Coupe with 88-89k. It hasn't had it 90k service and it seems to need a new clutch. (seems to need a little messaging at times to get into gear - doesn't always shift smoothly...still learning Clutch, synchros?).

If the PPI goes well what do you experts/fans think is a "reasonable price" to offer. The seller initially wanted $27,000 and has come back to me and said make him a reasonable offer. Please Help! Thoughts??

Make sure you find out if he has had the top end done, or another fix for the SAI problem, it he hasn't, that car is probably due soon. If the rest checks out, I would haggle over the clutch and 90k service. $27k with a top-end already done, a new clutch, and 90k service, would be a good deal IMHO ! Don't forget to do the LWF, "while you're in there". GL

The A-10 and a 993 compliment each other well... good luck. I would say that $34K - $35K would be the right number with new clutch and top end.

The tranny should be very smooth to shift. Sounds like a clutch issue. Good luck!

Search on "993 Pricing". There is a thread with over 6,000 views. You'll find a spreadsheet that should be helpful.

Default All good!

All good info fellas! I will try a new search. Can you guys give me a little info on what top end service is and price (does this service/fix/replace the SAI and its issues - still getting educated on the SAI)? As well as LWF? I will search into these more.
Thanks again...more than helpful and off to search!

If you can get a LWF and RS clutch installed, including parts, for $2,000, you're doing pretty well. I think the normal pricing is around $2500-$3000.

I don't know of any Porsche shops in Tucson, but Call D.J.Jackson at Jackson Enterprises in Phoenix on Monday. He would be more than happy to discuss your concerns.
D.J.'s shop specializes in maintaining 993's.
D.J.'s phone number is: (602) 997-2785.

Yes I used Jackson (recommended) when I bought my 97 C4S last May.
They installed the RoW M030 suspension kit, alignment, major tuneup, oil change and a few misc items installed.
I'm about ready to schedule another appt. for the annual oil change when I get back into Phoenix next month.
D.J.'s father opened the shop 30 plus years ago, and passed away some time ago. D.J. and his brother John now own and turn the wrench on many air cooled 911's.
I highly recommend this shop. They know these air cooled cars and charge a fair hourly rate for their work.
Good luck with your buy!
PM if you ever want to drive the northern AZ roads.
Bob

Offer $25k, then get the clutch done, & the 90k service.

As a point of reference, I just purchased a 97 C2. A one owner daily driver with 93k miles (well now it has 94k). Not a garage queen but a well maintained example. Clutch, top end, (due to SAI) steering rack all done as well as the 90k service. The car needed new tires, will need brakes and I plan to replace the suspension as what is in there is good but original and getting tired. I paid $25k. The car has higher miles then other examples but the other cars were more money and did not have the attention this one got. Will see how the ownership experience goes. I love it.

I agree with the advice your getting above. I can second the advice of a LWF as I made that change to my car when I had the clutch done. If you need to have the SAI done (under the heading of "while you're in there") you can look into putting in a set of RS 3.8 cams. Made a huge difference in my car. I paid about $1,000 for the cams after the core credit for factory parts. This was 3 years ago so cost probably have changed due to timing and exchange rates etc. Additioinal labor shouldn't be that much since the motor will be out of the car and the top end would be disassembled to clean the SAI. I pulled out my bill from when I had the work done and I would guess $2,500 from clutch and another $1,500 to $2,000 for the top end (not including cost of cams.) I would get written quotes for the work that needs to be done and use those in your negotiation. Good luck!
