RS/EVO tie rod clone mod - chapter II
#32
You are on the list. I hope to complete it this weekend and get it off to swmic, then zechunique, then to you.
I've had it a month already due to a short vacation and three kids that constantly modify my planned schedule! Hopefully the other two rennlisters will be a little more prompt than I.

Well, all you guys out there that were going to "stress" test this setup, don't worry, I've taken car of it. Got smacked wheel to wheel in race in June, which busted my tie rod (note right side of pic), and actually bent that bump steer spacer bolt on left slightly. However, the drilled and pinned steering coupler is still tight.

Hi
I had two thick washers machined up and then welded to the inside arm and outside of the tube. You have to be very careful with the heat though and cool frequently.

As perpetrator of this pinning mod, I thank you for this unfortunate, but meaningful, 'stress' test ..... can't buy good advertising like that!!
Not to be flippant, but I was wholly confident in the integriy of this mod .... so do truly appreciate your posting.
WRT your failed outer end, is it possible that the steel used to fabricate this speciality piece is too hard? - ie ... lacking ductility .... take a look at the pics when I first started on this route, linked here anatomy of a tie rod. The assembly was from my parts car, one that had had a devestating crash on that corner: the stock tie rod outer and inner halves did not fail .... but were seriously bent. That situation would have been orders of magnitude more severe than smacking wheels together on track.
It may be worthwhile to check the Rockwell hardness of the aftermarket outers vs stock pieces, and have them annealed if required .... for I'm sure that the design objective is to suffer a bend vs failure in steering components.
Just a thought ....

The tool made by chaoscreature (Peter) is being sent out today to Cosmic_993 as he was the only one that replied with interest. If someone is interested in it next feel free to PM him.
Best of luck

Garth -- The tie rod end in the pic is actually aluminum. As I understand it, it's an early ERP one. All my suspension joints and connections are completely solid. Not really any room for movement but bending parts. My shock tube was tweeked a little.
...I too was very confident your "fix" was really unbreakable. That tube is so thick on the steering linkage and there's no way that pin would ever get sheered; all the other susp parts would be breaking first.

I got the job done in less than an hour tonight after getting the "second" tool from "flatsixforme" and now will be sending to "cincy_ron".
soooo.....
chaoscreature (Peter) ----> Flatsixforme ----> cosmic_993 -----> cincy_ron ----> Marin s4?

Well, I received the package today. Not only is there the tool that chaoscreature fabricated, but Mark (cosmic_993) included a bag full of the required roll pins, AND a brand new Titanium drill bit to go along with it. Nicely done! Is this place great or what?
I'll be doing the mod to my car this week and then this will be available to either pass on to Marin S4 (if he hasn't already got the tool by Garth) or the next person in line...
