I just completed this upgrade, using Garth's special fixture (thanks Garth!). It was easy to accomplish, and took only a few hours to complete.
Driving impressions? It does have a better feel to the steering. No significant change in harshness, just when you expect some feedback (over a bump in a sweeper) you get it directly, mushiness gone.
I like it, and can't wait to provide impressions after a track session or autocross. Likely in a few weeks.
The only improvement to Garth's great instructions is to sweep up the metal chips from under the car before taking it off the jack stands. That's all.
Thanks again to Garth, for both posting this nice upgrade as well as loaning out his drill fixture. It's being sent home today, so you should see it soon.

Jeff,
Fantastic.
So now Garth's RollPinDrillingJigThing has found a place next to my AlternatorShaftHolderThing in the Rennlist Tool Pool!

Thanks for the sharing a great idea Garth. I am adding this to my list of upgrade projects when I get my next 993. Incidentally, I wonder if this could be a fix for inner tie-rod end wear? If the rubber is starting to fail, wouldn't the installation of this pin solve the problem and offer an improvement as well? This is all assuming that the overall integrity of the tie-rod isn't compromised. Thoughts?

The 'cool tool' will be available once it has completed two more stops committed to R'listers .... as Jeff has dropped it in the mail today for it's next destination. Simple to add another name to the chain if anyone is interested - just PM me for a link to have it mailed to you.

sorry, dumb question:
from what i can tell, it acts as a sheer pin, but it doesn't go thru both walls. Is there enough room to use a small fastener, maybe a #4 or #6 with a locking nut on the opposing side?
Awesome Idea, i am going to do it after i change my rack in my car.

Yes, I have a second tool made by Peter (chaoscreature)...it's a slightly different design but worked very well for us. I can double-check with him to see if he has an issue if it makes the rounds...if so, I'll be happy to send it out with the supplies I have left (I think I have 2 pins, hose clamp and the good drill bit I bought which got me through both tie-rods). To address a couple posts up, I used safety wire looped through the pin and tied it off around the outside of the tie rod...no movement from the pins after two track events. I'll check with Peter and in the meantime if someone wants it PM me and we can start a list. I'll give cgfen first right of refusal to go first as I offered it to him first.
1. cgfen (maybe)

IMHO, a roll pin is far better than any bolting arrangement - and **yes, it does capture both walls of both barrels**.
Glad to see it still in circulation .... keep on ...
