I was exploring the idea of transplanting a 997 tiptronic transmission to my 993 to gain an extra gear and faster gear change. What would it take to make it work, besides $$$? Would the new transmission fit?

Hi;
996/997 transmissions do not fit any of the air-cooled engines due to major differences in the bellhousing design & configurations. The GT-3, GT-2, and TT transmissions will fit the 993 engine although the shifting & electronics (in the case of the Tip) are different.
997 Tiptronic transmissions require totally different ME 7.8 electronics that the 8=993's do not have (nor can use).

"So we drilled it out so that it would fit,
and with a little bit of help from an a-dapter kit,
we had that engine runnin' like a song. . ."

That's interesting. In your opinion, would adapting a modern 6speed to our cars be more cost efficent than regearing. Seems as though we'd mostly need to concern ourselves with linkage and mounting issues.
There are tons of these transmissions to be found and I'm guessing the gearing isn't as screwy as our cars.
