Default sunroof

my sunroof is malfunctioning. It makes a grinding noise when I try to open it; I assume it is the gears or motor? The sunroof does not open at all. I have searched the forum, and have found lots of DIY on this topic. But I really don't have the time to do it. Does anyone know how much this repair entails and costs at eg Porsche Dealership? Does the repair entail the removal of the ceiling? and would one see that the ceiling has been removed after the sunroof motor/gear has been fixed? Thank you.

Thank you for asking about this for me.
Just this weekend, mine began making the same grinding noise when CLOSING/retracting.
It opens fine but grinds loudly when closing and will only close if I help it along.

Anybody?

The symptoms I had were the motor running and nothing happening with the sunroof. Turns out a cable was broken. I would highly recommend buying the necessary parts outside of the dealer and replacing both cables at the same time. I saved a decent amount of $ on the relatively minor parts this way. I had the dealer repair the sunroof since the seller agreed to this repair as part of the ppi.

tjangi,

I had the same problem a few weeks back. It turns out in my case the gear within the sunroof drive transmission mechanism had snapped off (a more common problem apparently is the casing cracking). In any event, I had a porsche independent replace the part. It cost me approx US$500. The part on pelican parts is listed for around $485 IIRC. So it's not a labour intensive fix, just an expensive part.

I have a working motor and new cables if anyone is interested....
I just removed the sunroof from the car (making a track car). The PO had installed new cables right before my purchase in Dec. The motor is original. Unfortunately I have already sold the transmission.

$500 for a sunroof part?! Pah-leez! That is absurd.
I will take my car to my mechanic this week and will give you an update.

Check for loose change.....

You sure you didnt loan your 993 to Sweet944 last night?????

From 993 forum "Tailgater giving you the brights thread"

Sweet944...."I keep a one of my cup holders (in the truck) full of pennies. Just grap around 10 to 15 and out the sunroof they go. They usually get the hint."

Before you spend any money check to ensure that the motor is secured. I had the same symptoms. The root of the problem was the screws that held the the motor inplace had backed out. Get in the back seat and drop the rear head liner and poke around to see if things look right.

This is the part I was referring to that I had to replace in my case:

911-564-601-01-OEM Sunroof Transmission, 911 (1976-98)
Brand: Genuine Porsche [Photo] [view in parts diagrams]
$483.00

Cheers,

Alan

Yup, that's the part.
My sunroof transmission had a loose screw which caused the housing to crack. I took it to my mechanic and it is indeed $466.
The good news is this part was used for 20 years. I picked one up from Parts Heaven in Hayward, CA for $150.

Just pop open the zipper and remove the cardboard to look up there, you will probably find a loose or cracked gearbox.
