Default Way OT: Lake Tahoe

Guys, my wife has been busting my chops for years to take her to Lake Tahoe. I have no knowledge of the area or where to even begin looking for a place to stay for a few days. Our 26th anniversary is coming up and I thought I would try and get away for a few days. Any ideas, recommendations, etc... is greatly appreciated.
tia.

I have stayed there a number of times. Love Tahoe!

The Ridge View condos which are part of The Ridge (http://www.ridgetahoeresort.com/accommodations.html) are really nice, just as the name suggests, have a terrific view of the lake. They are on the Nevada side, near the Heavenly lifts. There is a shuttle that takes you from there to the other locations. Up the hill are the spa, pool (indoor/outdoor) tennis courts, gym etc...

I have also had nice places through Lake Tahoe accomodations http://www.tahoeaccommodations.com/index.htm

I would like to stay at the Marriott downtown one of these days, since they have a lift that goes directly from the hotel to Heavenly, you can stay downtown and ski in/out.

if you are not into skiing, there are spectacular sights, Emerald Bay is gorgeous. Truckee is nice in the summer. We like to go inner tubing on the Truckee in the summer. Paul Mcartney vacations in North Tahoe often. I have never seen him, but I understand he will go into one of the bars in North Tahoe and get up an play for an hour or so when he is in town.
Or if you are more the Sammy Hagar type, there is a Cabo Wabo cantina in Tahoe as well. I don't think Sammy plays there as much as he does in Cabo. Good Tequila though!

Casinos, though not as many as vegas, enough to drop a few dollars or see some shows.

here is the view from the roof of the Ridge View. All rooms face the lake, so depending one what floor you are one you have a similar view.

Tahoe rocks! I'll be there skiing the week of March 24th. Can't help with places to stay. I have family that owns a place there and I mooch off them. A regular poster lives in Reno, I'm sure we will here from him soon.

We like to stay away from the South Shore glitz and glitter. We like the Incline Village and the North shore areas.

The Hyatt resort in Incline village has some very nice lakeside cottages that we have used:

Scott,
What time of year do you want to travel and what do you like to do? If it's not a skiing vacation, I would stay away in the winter. Also stay away during peak Holidays, especially 4th of July. After the snow melts it's great and through out the summer and fall. My favorite time is after the kids go back to school in the fall. And no point in staying at South Shore unless you're into the Casinos, etc.
Lots of beautiful spots around the Lake. Make sure you take a drive around the lake, or if you cycle, ride a bike. It's only 72 miles. Have fun.

I live about an hour away from Tahoe in the Foothills (Nevada City) so if you're going to be driving up from Sac (on hwy 80) let me know and I'll come out and meet you. I've lived in this area for a looong time and can advise you on some the local hot spots.

My cousin biked it one year when we were camping up there. He was in great shape then, and it took him a better part of the day.
He was blasted at the end, but said it was one of the best rides he had ever done.

If you think the road biking there is good, you should hit the trails.

+1 on Incline Village--thats where my 95 C4 and 77 Bronco came from and I have several friends there--I stay in Incline every time I go to Tahoe. South Shore is too touristy for me. Plus, you can drive there in 40 minutes--do a big swing from Inlcine, Sunnyside, Tahoe City Southshore, and back up to Incline--but pitstop at In-N-Out Burger in Carson City..

INCLINE IS AN AWESOME PLACE---I LOVE IT THERE!! DONT FORGET ABOUT EATING AT T's!!!

If its just you and the wife, I would recommend these condo's. at Forest Pines I stayed there 2 years ago (123 Juanita) . Its 2 blocks from the Ski Beach. You can walk from the Forest Pines condo's. You may have access to Incline Beach as well. Just a suggestion but these are REALLY close to the beach and the Hyatt and right off Lakeshore. The location and promixity to the beach cant be beat from a walking prospective. Of course, there are many more places in Tahoe--just depends on what you want but Im picky where I stay and the place I stayed at was very nice, for the price.

123 JUANITA #2-11, Incline Village, NV 89451---stayed here. VERY nice place.

But I looked at this one as well. Had a plasma and has a cool loft, more seats in the living room.

I am a north shore kind of guy. Obviously it is closer, but I am not in to all the tourist traps in South shore. Heavenly was bought out by Vail Resorts, and it is full of shops now. I prefer staying in Incline Village. There are more ski resorts on the north shore and plenty of beaches too. If you're coming in the summer, don't miss Sand Harbor. It is a great place to spend the day and the Shakespeare festival is fun too. If you don't rent a condo or house, you can stay (and gamble) at the Hyatt and there are a few great restaurants too. I would recommend the Lone Eagle Grill, the Big Water Grill and Soule Domain. PM me when you come, if you want to meet up or need any more info.

For skiing, most San Franciscans prefer Squaw Valley, that's maybe why noone here has mentioned it...I don't waste my time gambling, so you have to understand convenience to the slopes is more important for me...If your wife wants "spa" treatment, they do have that at Squaw, too.

We normally stay either in the new Village at Squaw, Plumpjack Inn, or find a cabin rental near Tahoe City down to Sunnyside. Check Craigslist (SF Bay Area) under vacation rentals as most of the rental groups advertise there; and then to their websites--you will spend hours on this.

Although I have not been since the renovations/expansion, Northstar-at-Tahoe seems to have a LOT going on (similar to Squaw). Sounds like I need to check out Incline Village next time I'm up there...

If you are a skier - locals agree that Squaw Valley is the best place to ski!

Try the Squaw Valley Lodge - Spa, Gym, etc and you can walk to the slopes:
