A long electrical zip tie looped around the front ball cup of the forward shift rod makes for a reliable safety strap for when the plastic ball cup insert crumbles ....

I discovered this years ago on my 928 - when the shifter link popped off, leaving the car stuck in gear.

I did this today before wrapping up the front end work. Instead of a zip-tie, I used a length of stainless wire:

Does anyone have the actual part numbers for the RS shift lever, fork and shift rod? Reference 1, 11 & 12 in the drawing. I only have the US parts catalog and can't find them. I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Paul.

Andreas that's perfect, do something similar to the shifter end because that's the one that drops off more often.

Paul,
If you get 12, you'll want 14 as well Sunset has the best price on this lovely combo...

Was doing my front end bushings with Chris Walrods kit and had to take off the front pan. Referring to the drawing in post 19, my bushing on the front of rod 15 was quite loose. So, am going to replace with a Heim joint in the next few weeks and want to do the rear bushing on that rod which will take some welding, but am unsure of the best way to modify the shift lever to work with this type joint. Any ideas?

And, is rod #12 a replacement for rod #29?

Thanks Andreas, that is very helpful because I am planning on ordering these pieces, don't want to end up missing a part I didn't know about.

I replaced that front ball cup last year as the old one was super sloppy. Lo and behold, the new one still had a certain amount of vertical free play. From what I understand, you can purchase just the plastic insert as a 928 part.

Rod #12 is the RS shift rod - I would not leave home without it. It replaces #29 completely and does a wonderful job of tightening up the shift feel. Rather than the stock rubber bushing, the RS rod uses a nice u-joint. I'm very pleased with this change.

Thanks Andreas. Mine had quite a bit of vertical play too. Can't wait to get rid of the rubber joint. I've never liked the vague feel. Since this is a 964 part number, is this a standard piece from a 964 that all 964s have or a unique RS piece. Reason I'm curious is because my last 964 was about 6 years ago and it seemed to have crisper shifting than the 993s I've had.

Great thread!

Does anyone know of a place that sells metric heim joints for reasonable money?
Also, if going with the rs shift rod, is part #19 a boot to protect the universal joint of the rs shift rod?

Thanks,
Pete

I've done a google search and a bunch of sources come up. I've seen prices from about $6 to $45. There seems to be quite a variety ranging from aluminum body, steel body, stainless and then bronze inserts, teflon inserts etc. so it's kind of bewildering.

Just talked to Sunset and the RS shift rod is $368!! Guess that'll have to wait. I'm wondering if there is a way to adapt a small universal joint of some kind. I'm reasonably proficient at fabricating/welding and there has to be a way. First thought here is a universal from a small displacement shaft-drive motorcycle, any ideas out there?
