An open transport if it has to go through any areas of snow i.e. a mountain pass will get a nice coating of grime.

If the car is worth anything to you and you really care about it, go enclosed, if not, go open.

NICE! I love that color!!! I settled with silver, well, because all of our cars are silver!!! Just kidding. I was looking for a 540iT with sport package and found one and it happened to be silver. So there you go. I'd love to hear about your experiences with the car. I'll PM you later. Gotta get back to work now!

Oh and YA911fan, you are forgiven.

It already has some dings and it's going to live outside....I'd save the $$ on the open!

I'll second the vote for giving Bill DeMoise a call. Competitive pricing and closed carrier. Just used DeMoise in December to transport my 993 from TX to MI. Open transport wasn't an option.

You should drive it back. Sounds like a fun way to spend two days with a BMW V8!

Well, that was the original plan. Unfortunately I just don't have the time to spare right now. I really wanted to though.

I did some research on transportreviews.com and just chose the top dozen rated places over the past 2 years. As of right now here are my quotes (open transport/enclosed transport). (I have no affiliation with any of these companies and hope listing these prices doesn't make anyone mad):

Worry Free Transport - $645/$1045
Angels Moving Autos - $825/$1475
Specialty Moving Systems - $895/$1595
Hilton Transport - $733/$1478
Autozipper - $735/$1285
1st Call Auto Haul - $694/$1241
Wheeler Shipping - $855/$1455
Dependable Auto Movers - $650/$1050
Agape Transport - $750/$1150
Direct Express - $700/$1200
Cascade Vehicle Shipping - $809/$1259

The following weren't listed on the website, but I emailed at the urging of some friendly RL'ers (all enclosed):

DeMoise - $1300
FedEx - $1370
Horseless Carriage - $2127

As you can see the prices are all over the map. Open carriers range from $645 - $895 and Enclosed carriers range from $1045 - $2127!!!

On paper the smartest thing to do would be to go with the cheapest enclosed carrier. I mean, am I missing something??? Is thre going to be a difference between the carrier who charges me $1045 and the one who charges me $2127? I'm asking this not in "all seriousness", but partially serious... They pick the car up in Oklahoma City, put it in the truck, drive to Redondo Beach and take it out of the truck, right?

If there are no objections from everyone, I think I'll just choose the $1045 quote.

I loaded my race car chassis on an open car hauler last week. I was very unimpressed by the set-up. Unload a car ot rwo, load one, reload the others. They make a hundred stops unloading and loading along the way. The cars unloaded were not treated particularily well, and given the weather they are subject to I'm not sure I'd do it myself.
If I were buying a car as you are I would do one of two things. Ship it in an enclosed trailer, they use a hydraulic ramp so loading is flat and simple versus the ramp type loading of the open carrier. The second option is to find a nephew or college age friend, fly them out and have them drive it back. You gain some wear and tear, but at least you have control of the vehicle.

FedEx. Deep pockets -- if there are any problems, they'll work things out. Their price seems downright reasonable too! I would personally prefer the fly and drive method but it looks like that won't work for you.
