"Price is about right.....if it was a 2002. 2001's had issues and if you don't drive these cars hard, you'll pay dearly to clean out the carbon build up ($8K for BMW to do it). Use it or loose it!"

"I've been watching them close....And you can get a e39 M5 for less then $20,000 with less then 75k on it if you look hard."

Just passing this info along... Good luck with the sale. I'd love to have it but we already have too many cars! I have lusted after the E39 M5 since they came out, as have most "car people" on the planet.

Thanks Steve... answers are:

Nope, I'm not upside down... I own it outright (no loan).

The big M5 mechanical (and other) changes were made between MY '00 and '01... a lot of MY '00 M5s had significant issues with burning oil and carbon build-up (my neighbor has this issue with his '00). My car doesn't burn or leak a drop of oil. This issue is similar to the OBDII 993s... the '96 through '98 years all have generally the same risk of carbon build-up and/or valve guide issues.

E39 M5 south of $20k? I'd like to see proof of that. Would have to be a salvage or poorly cared for car.

I'm not desperate to sell which is probably indicated in the price... I won't "give" it away. I watch the market (ebay, autotrader, M5Board, etc) every day as well, and my price seems VERY fair based on what I see. Condition and feel while driving are big differentiators in my mind as well. While I was looking, I drove several M5s (a few from reputable dealers as well as private parties) and none felt as tight and sorted out as the one I ended up buying.

Anyway, maybe she'll be mine for awhile and that's okay too.

Best of luck with the sale Jeff. The E39 M5 is last of breed, much like the 993. Hard to believe the market is soft on these cars and that their value has dropped so much. I thought I was getting the short end of the deal when I sold my full load 2002 M5 for $75k in 2005 (that's in Canadian $$$ circa 2005 though).

I definitely came out ok when the red-light-runner totalled my M5 in 2005. I had an 00 with 67k miles, and I got $59k for the totalled value of the car.

Every cloud indeed has a silver lining. Best of luck with your sale.

Silver lining for sure... hope everyone was okay.

Thanks for the well-wishes.

Chuck,

The E39 M5 is a great car. At this pricing level, it's a great choice.

Just do it....

This is a tough one. But it is the first car that caught my eye in awhile. And when they catch my eye like this, I'm usually in trouble.
I almost cried when I saw your post about the accident with your M5. So glad you didn't get hurt. I was hurt also because I felt like you had the perfecto combo.

I wasn't even thinking about this this morning.!!

OH, and one thing CP. This M5 appears to be stock. The stock M5 will surely hold it's value better than your car because of the crazy things RUF did to that fine machine. So, in a few years, if you've got some cash to throw into the deal, we'll trade cars. Don't ya think?

Last time, I promise.

Default Hang tight, it will sell eventually.

The price seems to be in line with others I've seen with similar mileage. It's just a matter of the right buyer spotting it at the right time. Your car is absolutely gorgeous. Love the Imola Red.

If someone wants a 4 door sedan that minimizes the loss when away from their 993, this is the car. Besides, it's the model that ties the look of the original BMW's with the modern features of the current models. Pre-Bangle at it's finest.

I think the biggest issue e39 M5 sellers are up against is they are coming out of warranty. I have CPO and full Maintenance Warranty on my 03 but it ends next year. Many have fewer concerns owning a car out of warranty if they've owned it for several years than buying one they don't know.

Beautiful car, and as a fellow Rennlister with a 993TT and an 02 M5 I can tell you there is NO better combo in the garage than those two. What I love about the M5 is that I feel similar power in it when I get out of the TT. Different types of power for sure, but both are true head jerking, "throw you back in your seat" cars. Anyone who is thinking of having this as a daily driver will not disappointed (chuck). >:-)

Hope I'm not kicking myself in the teeth by saying this, but I bought my 2002 M5 in March of 2005 at 39,000 miles with no CPO and I have not had a single problem with it through 67,000 miles as it is now.

Yes, I am **** about keeping my cars up to snuff, but I haven't had to do a damn thing to this car except regular routine fluid changes and the 60K Inspection II. I have had three 911's but I have had about six bimmers and I have never been disappointed. If you take care of them they will last.

You guys are all great... really appreciate the comments. There's something truly special about this board and I miss it a lot... no other is the same (just like your cars!).

Thanks again.

I would SO buy a car like this, but unfortunately your steering wheel is on the wrong side, not to mention the thousands of miles of ocean between us and the nightmare of transportation that implies.
I loved my E30 325i, and fell in love with an E26(?) M5 during a BMW Club track day. But Porsche was calling...........

Robert,

67,000 miles and all the sensors (MAF, O2, CAM etc.) are still working perfectly? That is awesome.

Mine at 65k miles had most of them failed already, including the thrust bushings, the last-stage relay, the 3rd brake light module, the seat memory module, the display pixel, the passenger side CAT.......

You get the picture.
