Money can't buy you happiness, but you can rent it for awhile. Money may not buy you happiness, but lack of money will bring you misery. Money also can provide you with enough stimulus to distract you from your unhappiness. So there ya go.

I think the answer is that having relatively more money than you're used to can absolutely buy short term happiness. But in the long run, we adjust our expectations and lifestyle to match our income/wealth in such a way that it mutes or even nullifies the effect.
But that's a narrow view. Having enough money to be comfortable and secure buys a kind of happiness (contentment is better) that makes it easier to derive happiness from other things that have nothing to do with things/toys/purchases.
Here's something to think about: If you could take a few $ thousand now, and give it to yourself as a teen-early-20-something, you'd be creating net happiness. Then think about someone just like you--age, kids etc.--but poor and worried every day about just meeting basic needs much less anything extra. Give that person some of your toy budget, and you'd be creating huge multiples of net happiness. And think how happy it would make you to do that.
