It does get easier w/ practice and an extra pair of hands helps a lot

I see. I would try to get a small amount of spray lubricant under the lip of the boot in order for it to rotate on the stud as you tighten.

i will grind down a 16mm but i don't think that is the issue. I did some fooling around w/ my unmounted RS/Evo uprights. The only way to do it w/o stressing the boots is to spin the whole droplink. I don't think that is possible when mounted in the car.

I just checked a pair of forged C4S links ( which only have a single ball stud for the upper end that screws into the carrier) ..... and the stud was easily turned by the 16mm flats without the slightest resistance from the boot: if yours remains stubborn, I would give it a shot of spray lube as Andreas mentioned. I do recall taking them apart by turning the stud only - not swiveling the whole drop link.
Appears that you unfortunately inherited the problem one of the lot

I have 4 994RS drop links 2 new and 2 ~3yrs old. All exhibit the same issue. I'll try lubing them
