I know this is sort of off topic - but there are so many watch enthusiasts and experts on this site that I'd like to get an answer from when asked? "Are the Porsche limited addition watches worth collecting?" 911 GT3 Cup, 936 Martini, etc?

Also understand that the older models are made by IWC and the new ones from Eterna???

I don't think so. They're not like the Ferrari Panerai watches. Let's see if others have more experience with them.

 

I only follow the Ocean 2000 produced by IWC. They are collectible and particularly the Bund (German Military version) variants are appreciating nicely. Couldn't afford one new in the 80's and haven't yet dived in (pun unintended). They're $5-$20K depending on condition and whether they have the appropriate accoutrements.

Personally, I would only buy an expensive watch to wear it (daily or from time to time), not to store in a lock box someplace as an investment. I posted a link to this specific watch in a different thread -- but you can learn alot about these watches by googling.

I think the current generation of pd watches are like upscale Swatches. They look cool and work great and might be "collectible" in the same way. But not like jewelry.

I love my PAT. Best watch I've ever owned. But I'm definitely not a watch purist.

 

It is just a freaking watch! It might be collectable but, like a wallet or keys or cellphone it is a tool for you. I love watches but I only buy what I can afford. I have a RS Spyder watch and love it. It is fun and looks cool. Watches are like art, buy what you like and not worry about the value.

 

One other thing--I think the original poster is confusing Porsche watches with Porsche Design watches. They're totally different.

 

I have a 25 year old Porsche Design watch in my collection with number of others. If watches are your thing then you might want one but they're not collectible investments

 

This didn't apply to the Rolex GMT Master I bought 20 years ago for $1100.00 because it's now probably worth $4000.00+ and the James Bond Limited Edition Omega Seamaster I bought last year is also up around $800.00 since they sold out worldwide.

The 1100 dollar watch you bought 20 years ago was a bad investment. Had you tossed that 1100 into the stock market just a blue chip you'd have done better. Not to mention the bid offer spread in watches is a joke.

I collect older Porsche watches made by IWC (from the 80's). These are quartz watches which are not "in fashion" at the moment. IWC is a premium watch maker and the PD watches from IWC are
very well made and seem to be holding value. The newer watches seem to be mass market watches with Porsche adding the name Porsche to the design. If you like it, buy it...but it probably is not a "collectable".

 

If you like it buy it.
