Default It was the day before Christmas and my DME failed!

I was out nearby shopping and when I went back to the car and tried to start it up it made like is was going to start then just stopped.

I tried again and it just turned over and over...

I sat there thinking "what the hay" then I thought DME!

Luckily, when I first bought my car, eight years ago, I bought a spare DME relay!

Popped in the spare and it started right up.

Now I'm going to get another one as a spare!

I hope everyone has a spare DME relay sitting in their car just in case of a failure. You never know when or where it's going to go bye-bye.

Happy New Year BTW!

I've got a spare in the car and a spare spare in the house, for if (when) I use the spare.

I just got back from the dealer with my new spare.

I'm glad they had them in stock.

My car went about 100K miles with the original DME.

I noticed the new DME's are about 1/4 or so bigger than the originals.

P.S. I can't edit the title in my original post from "I" to "It"...

make sure that when you try to edit your first post, once you click "edit" and the edit window comes up, choose "Go Advanced" on the bottom right of the edit window, and there you should be able to edit the title of your thread.

Personally, for the 3 Porsche's I've owned I've purchased the new relay, installed the new relay and kept the old relay as a known good spare. Just my .02

We had the same thing happen, I just did a 60,000 service with Dennis (ala C4S_Fan) and it seemed OK (lots of things were replaced including the dist belt). Anyways he drove from Vancouver to Seattle and the car hicupped once. OK, what was that? When he next started it in the garage, starts and then dies. Tries again, same thing. Try again, its dead. So now what?

Well, since we changed so many things we chased our tails by checking all the stuff that we replaced, not really thinking about it. After determining the problem is fuel, and checking the power to the fuel pump, then finally a light bulb went off...the DME! Dennis replaced the DME and the car fired right up. It was a bit embarassing since, now that you look at it, the symptoms were classic DME. I feel like such an idiot! Well, live and learn I guess...

Cheers,

Mike

My original DME has gone 160K. Murphy's law would strike if I did not carry a spare.

I put a new DME relay in my C4 when I purchased the car in October and it just failed. Thankfully I had a spare and the car fired right up. It's disappointing that I only got three months of service out of a factory fresh relay. Since it's a bad idea to be without a spare relay, Pelican is shipping two new ones out to me.

Yikes! Three months and a new DME failed! I'd better get a spare spare then!

Yup - a spare in the glovebox and a spare in the trailer for the track car for me. I shocked a 944 owner at the track back in the fall - he was trying to narrow down an issue and the DME relay was on the "suspect list". I said "Do you want to borrow my spare?" and he looked shocked that I would have one. As a good 993 Rennlister, I said "Doesn't everybody carry a spare ??"

I bought a new one from Pelican a few weeks ago and it was faulty right out of the box!!! Pelican overnighted me a new one (excellent service as always from them) which worked fine. I keep the original 1996 relay which worked fine as a spare.
