Question How to clean OEM Big Ovals

I just got my used OEM Big Ovals from German ebay. They do not look bad but there are spots which look like burned in gump. What is a good way of cleaning / polishing them?

Thanks,
Erik

Erik,
I remember pulling my OEM Big Ovals shortly after purchasing my car because they were "crusty"; all kinds of crap that just would not come off with normal cleaning. After a couple failed attempts with various cleaners, I sat down with a bottle of Soft Scrub and went to work. I was a little reluctant at first as I thought it may be too harsh, but it was just right and the tips turned out great.

Happy polishing!

Jeff

Likely baked on road tar ...

Wrap the tip in an old rag and pour on a few ounces of varosol/mineral spirits/paint thinner, toss into a plastic bag - let it marinate for a few hours until tender .....

Have you tried Autosol? Highly abrehesive compound.. Maybe it's not tough enough? Worked for me, check this thread:

Try this. I've used it on most of my engine and plastic parts. When I tracked motorcycles it's the greatest thing for 'dry' cleaning. I don't recommend using it on hot surfaces as I was always afraid it would burn into the metal.

Trust me. It really is good stuff and you can get it at any Honda Auto and Motorcycle shop.

I dont have pics here at work, but tried several different cleaners and the best for me was, remove the ovals, place in softjawed vice and apply Autosol using cloth and plenty of elbow grease (effort), then use a buffer to finish....they gleamed when I was done......unfortunately this was a waste of effort as three months later I replaced the exhaust with Maxflows so the original mufflers and tips are sitting in polythene in my garage ......

Aren't those stainless steel? If so you should be able to buff to your heart's content, just finish off with a very light polish.

Autosol gets my vote; I've used it for years.

Default Berrymans Chemtool

I had the same problem with mine. The easiest way is to use Berrymans Chemtool which is available almost anywhere. I also used a small wire brush on the tough spots and the gunk comes right off! Also on follow maintenance all you have to do is spray a little inside the tip and you can clean off all exhaust residue with a mechanics red rag. Cheers!

Here are the pics. They are the Turbo Tips (EP 6110) but they fit nicely into the bumper of a NB. There was a post some months ago where someone did the same upgrade and I liked the look!
