OK, I took a chance and gave Dallas Custom Steering Wheels a try. The owner's name is Don.
No affiliation, just a happy customer.

- Overall, very nice work
- Responsive and very good to deal with
- I had my wheel covered in black Alcantara with silver stitching to match aluminum crest, shifter, eBrake, pedals
- Also had him add 1/16" padding for a little extra thickness. In hindsight, 1/8" might have been better
- Turn around time was phenomenal (one week from the time he got it until I received it today)
- Price was $289 plus shipping

I just put the wheel back in the car.
Here are a couple of pics of the wheel and one gratuitous shot from our Thanksgiving trip last week
It's hard to get interior shots that looks good with a flash... black things look grey and other things look kinda ugly. I need to get it out of my shop and into some natural light... or take a photography class. No time for either at the moment.

Oh, and the pedals are from the group buy a few weeks ago, Ultimate Pedals. Thinking about aluminum gauge rings... not sure yet.

This is why I've been looking for a used 996 3 spoke wheel and airbag! That looks great! Love to see someone go for a dashboard covered in alcantara.
I need a 2nd job! Anyone interested in a 3 year old boy? He has an identical twin brother, so he won't be missed too much... J/k

geez, some of you guys are a bad influence
Hmm... I have 2 kids, small and cute. Wonder what I can get for them?
Back to the top of the slope again... though I'm not sure that **** is so easy to redo. Does the aluminum top come off? Gotta check it out.

Here's a pic (before he shipped he sent 6 pics, hi-res) that shows the actual color a bit better. It is actually black.

Looks great! I was waiting to see if you pulled the trigger. I have been wondering how this will hold up over time? Looks great and where did you get the silver crest for the wheel? BTW is your dash and center console leather covered? Looks the business.

Thanks!
I think I like it a lot. Can't wait to drive it tomorrow morning

Alcantara is a synthetic suede material and is very durable. It's made for this kind of thing. It feels awesome.
There is a Porsche PN for the silver crest airbag. Let me know if you want it and I can dig it up. The airbag came from Sunset imports.

I think the TTs came with full leather standard... Not totally certain.

My wife's BMW 330 came from the factory with an Alcatara wheel (shifter and e-brake) that hasnt held up all that well. A well documented problem, but even with all of that, I want to send my three spoker for this service!!

Do you have a pic of the backside of the wheel.... I'm contemplating re-covering a grey wheel and making it black alcantara. Would the alcantara cover all of the grey parts? I'd replace the airbag in black.

Glen, you mean the rear part of the wheel that is usually vinyl?
I have pics yes but that part is not covered in Alcantara. You could have it covered or simply dye that part black with a vinyl/leather dye. It is really easy to do...

Chris, sorry to hear the BMW Alcantara didn't hold up. That sucks. This stuff is supposed to be pretty tough...

Great... can I ask what you paid for the airbag?

sure... it's not pretty... airbags are about $500 in total after shipping. Finding one used is pretty difficult unless you get lucky or want to wait a long long time.

So... we'd be looking at $300 for the recover, $500 for the airbag, and then the price of a used 996 wheel at a couple hundred bucks... That is a tough pill to swallow.

I may just go with a Momo .07 and just say F#$% the airbag.
