A silly question about a battery tender ...
When I got my car in April, the previous owner gave me a banged up battery tender. I haven't driven my car in about three weeks and I pulled her out to wash her this weekend and she wasn't happy. I won't be driving her much for the next few weeks, so I want to hook up the battery tender.
Is there any risk that this banged up battery tender can screw something up? It makes me nervous to plug it in, hook it up and leave it in the garage unattended... am I worrying needlessly? I'm imagining my battery blowing up... The previous owner said he used it all winter long last year.
Should I just throw it out and go buy a new one for $60?

You don't even have to spend $60. I paid $39 for a Battery Tender that works great. If your current unit looks damaged or abused in a previous life, I'd replace it. $39 is a small cost for peace of mind. Any electronics, especially those with transformers and power supplies can be a fire source. No need taking a chance on something so small and inexpensive. I have a 10 old Sears charger sitting in the corner now because it started getting much hotter than it did earlier on. It still works, and has higher amp rating than the Battery Tender so I kept it if I need a fast charge; but I'd use it only when I'm available to monitor it. I use the new ones for long term battery maintenance.

Walmart sells cheap battery tenders for like $24. There is danger associated with battery tender, especially the ones that hooks up directly to the battery. I have seem photos of few burn cars from faulty battery tender. (Ferraris)
