I am not that familiar with the different Rollbars available for the 993. Is there a roll bar that doesn't preclude the use of the backseat? My kids are just about out of car seats and both are eager to ride in the back seat of "Daddy's Porsche", so I don't want to exclude this possibility. Thanks.
By definition, any roll bar is going to involve exposed metal tubing somewhere in the backseat area...which is incompatible with one's unprotected head in the same area during ANY lateral or longitudinal acceleration....
Just about any four point bar will render the back seats useless. Add one-piece seats, completely useless. Cant even get to the back windows to clean them..
I would never put anyone in a back seat of any car if there was a roll bar back there. Even with pads, the bar is very hard and will cause serious harm during an accident.
Any roll bar for a 993 is going to consist of a main hoop that runs behind the driver and passenger, two rear arms and a cross brace. Any way you look at it, even if there were no cross bar, a main hoop and rear arms present a whole bunch of hard, unforgiving, skull-crushing metal for any passengers who may fit back in the jungle gym.
The pictured roll bar, from a GTO, I believe, is as good as it's going to get for rear passengers, for it lacks a cross brace (but also lacks SFI padding). See all of that tubing? No way would I want my kids back there.

Send your car off to Ruf for an integrated rollcage
Tough call... depending on your intended use of the car, you may be better off with a harness bar, which is easily removed between track events. http://www.bkauto.com/porsche/r1010.php
This is the only suggestion I have. Use a Brey Krause Harness Bar. Although it doesn't offer any roll over protection it will accomodate harnesses and can be removed in 5 minutes. I plan on selling this harness bar soon if you are interested.
I was interested in a roll cage consisting of the main hoop and the two arms going towards the rear without any harness bar or (horizontal or diagonal) cross-brace that would add some rigidity and still give some roll-over protection, but that I could pad well enough to protect the kiddo's noggins. It seems like the general consensus is that the roll cage and transporting the kids are not compatible, so I guess that I will hold off on doing it. Thanks for all the replies.
1) No roll bar and rear seat pax.
2) No harness bar and track time (AutoX okay).
Simple rules.
I think this is one area where the cab owners get nice versatility... in my cab, I could pop the rollbar out in 20 minutes. You didn't need to remove the seats... just had to drop the top and the rollbar couldl be lifted out easily. However, even with the rollbar, I wouldn't want to land on my roof in that cab. Hence, the coupe purchase this weekend.
FVD sell these Roll Bars... I don't like all of the 'bolted joints' that they use. I don't think it is as stiff as a fully welded unit. I have been looking for what's out there and it seems that DAS is the best looking one out side of having a custom bar made. DAS bars are out of stock till mid December 2007.
