Default Weighty Issues

Hey guys, looking to save a few Lbs, wanted to know some opinions. I am going with a lightweight battery, and complete exhaust with cat bypass pipes, and I was planning on removing the rear seats. Is there anything else I can do relatively easy that would save me some pounds? I was hoping to drop under the 3K mark........any ideas?

yup, seats are big savings. You can drop 50 lbs by installing race seats.

For exhaust weight savings - fabspeed supercups are big bang for your buck.

Pull the interior side panels in the back seat and rip out the gray foam crap. Ditch all floor mats and then rip out the molded foam under the driver, passenger and back seat footwell areas. I think there's also foam in the rear parcel shelf covering. Don't forget to pull the back carpet and yank all of the foam that is glued with that horrendous spidey-web stuff.

RS inner door panels
RS Heater bypass pipe or Fabspeed block-off plates
Remove trunk carpet
Remove the rear seat belts too

Rear wiper & motor is 5.5 lbs. Mine's gone.

Rear seat belts are probably 2-3 lbs total.

Rear speakers and grills are 2.8 lbs total.

Lots of info on this if you do a search.

I personally don't want to remove sound deadening, so I was thinking about doing a fiberglass hood and decklid, plus all the other obvious things.

I bet a fiberglass ducktail or 993 RS lid would save ~20lbs. Lexan rear and quarter windows a few more.

Agreed on the sound deadening. It's not a good, sporty sound that comes through a bare firewall.

Hey, Noah,

Really? It'll set you free and make all of your dreams come true. Seriously, it's an easy way to lose weight. Is your car a DD?

Yeah, it's mostly a DD. I just haven't had the time to get to the track recently. I did the whole track-car makeover on my '77 911, and turned it into a superlight track weapon. Great times on the track, just a wicked fun car. But the problem is that I totally lost the ability to enjoy the car on the street, and I don't want to do that with the 993. I love how quiet it is on the highway -- no wind noise, no road noise, just the growl of the engine (I have bypass pipes installed). Anything that'll make my car less enjoyable on the street is, at least for now, not gonna happen. And how much weight is really to be lost through the sound deadening? Is it even 50 pounds?

I thought Princeton had a thread listing all the components and weight shred from his car. It is a really comprehensive list.

Enjoy.

Best estimate I've seen was like 30 lbs total (I think that was viperbob?). For me, it's not worth it either since I like to enjoy my car on the street. But if it were a pure track car it'd be another story.

I see. I've removed all of the interior foam and don't think my car is too loud. I have the RS flywheel and solid motor mounts. What makes it loud is the Supercups and the mind-numbing 2800 rpm drone. And what makes it rather inhospitable are the camber plates/monoballs and the perception that I am beating the car too much on regular roads.

:-D

+10

I tried removing the rear sound deadening panel (the thing that houses the rear speakers) to get some more sound... suffice it to say, it went back in after a 5 minute drive. The only additional sounds you get are not pleasant ones - a cacophony of rattles and unidentifiable metallic noises that make it sound terrible. On the track with a helmet on, yes. But not for a street car.
