Seems like jack stands have various minimum heights.
Is there a minimum height that I would want to look for when shopping for a pair?

Sheet metal stands can be dangerous, cast ones are ok but I had read of a instance of a cast 'tooth' failing allowing the car to fall. Both are probable fine to support the front of the car.
Get yourself a set of the A/C Hydraulic stands, they are AWESOME!!

Don't screw around with jack stands. Dang! These are getting hard to find. Steve at Ultimate Garage told me that the factory (in Denmark!) is basically sold out. For a while...

Those flat top stands seem to make a lot of sense. And yes, sold out..... damn....
What do you do with those U shaped stands when supporting the car on the "official" locations?
Is there an alternative to those flat topped stands?

Pretty much what Rally Jon posted was what I was talking about. I started a thread about this a bit ago because I want the whole car up on stands level and am afraid that when the back is on stands that jacking the front would make the car slide on the stands. I'm just a paranoid rookie I guess.

+1
I have spent many, many hours under my 993 over the last two years and feel that the AC stands were one of the best purchases I've made to date. Pricey, but thoroughly bombproof. I would have no worries sleeping under the car for a night.

+1 on top of whatever we are up to on the AC stands.
Rallyjon made those modified ones work like the flat tops... also Jon, could you post that link to that 914 page again where the stand failed (if you still have it.)
That will scare people into the ACs. It worked for me.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this Rennline product and could it be welded to the top of the AC Hydraulic stands? That is once the curved piece has been cut off
Here is what they say:
"Most newer cars have specific areas in the chassis designed for safely lifting the vehicle. These jack points require a pinned adapter that professional technicians use with their hydraulic car lifts. This jack pad locks into the the car by simply turning the unit and is specifically designed to be used with most floor style hydraulic jacks. It's low profile design gives your jack sufficient clearance to slide under the car and then safely lifts it to minimize potential slippage. Come's with a rubber top pad to eliminate the undercoating of your car from being damaged. If you are using these pads with a car lift, you will need (4) units to properly lift the vehicle. All steel construction, water jet and tig welded seams with a powder coated red finish that will last for ever."
